How do you load one of the alternate saves?

Sun Jan 03, 2016 8:09 pm

I control clicked on the save this gives me new backup directories.

I click in the back up folder and i get this.

Clicking any file in this directory does nothing. What am I doing wrong? How do i save the game to a name I understand and then load it when I want to?

Ageod has somewhat unintuitive save game approach, the one that presumes you don't want to save another game under different name as a desion millestone, while keeping to play on the original save game. So, I'll help you with what you need to do.

Under game load screen, click on the wheel in the top right corner. It will open 3 buttons. One of them says revert to previous turn. If you click it, the game will erase file from your current turn, and copy files from your backup1 folder to your save game folder. Backup 1 containts files for previous turn, backup 2 for the turn before that, etc.

Once you've done that, load the game through load game screen.

It would be nice to have a save game function like in other games - when you save a game, a pop-up window appears, and you can name it what you want.

You know you can rename it by a pop up window?

Yup. How do you reload it? As Ace stated, it's not intuitive at all.

A. When you start a scenario under the 'New' menu a new folder is created under your '..\My Documents\My Games\Wars of Napoleon\NGC\Saves' folder with the default name of the scenario. In your case '6 - 1805 Sealion What IF Campaign'.

B. Immediately after creating this scenario, or anytime afterwards, you can always rename the scenario. To do this, go to the 'Load' menu, select your scenario and click on the 'Saved Game manipulations' [gear] button in the upper right corner of the pop-up, then the 'Rename the game in selection' [pencil] button; enter the name of the scenario and press <Enter> or click on the check-mark button.

This renames the '..\Saves\{scenario name}' folder created in A. above and all file names below it.

C. After the execution of each turn, all the files belonging to running that turn are moved to the 'Backup1' folder beneath the '..\Saves\{scenario name}' folder created in A. If the 'Backup1' folder already exists, it is moved to 'Backup2', 'Backup2' to 'Backup3', etc, up to the number of backups you have selected under 'Options' menu -> System -> Auto-saved Turns. Up to 12 saves may be selected.

D. If you wish to turn the clock back in your game to redo a previous turn and continue from there, you can do as Ace as described.

The game does not support saving a scenario into a different name, which you can then load under that name as a separate scenario. It is possible to do that, but it's a non-supported possibility and you must manipulate the Saves folder content manually with a file manager such as Windows Explorer, *cough*cough*or a good file manager such as Total Commander*cough*.

  1. Manually create a '..\My Documents\My Games\Wars of Napoleon\NGC\Saves\{scenario name}' folder with any unique name; eg 'ZZZZ'.
  2. Copy the entire contents of '..\Saves\{scenario name}' into '..\Saves\ZZZZ'.
  3. Enter the '..\Saves\ZZZZ' folder, locate the .hst file and rename it to a unique name you wish to use--not a saved scenario name already used in the game!!-- eg. rename for example '6 - 1805 Sealion What IF Campaign.hst' to 'Sealion Test 01.hst'
  4. Open the 'Load' menu and select 'Sealion Test 01'.
  5. Click on 'Gear' -> 'Pencil' -> [check mark]--You must do this!!--. You may also select a different name at this point, before clicking the check-mark.

If you understand the BackupX folders well enough to understand what turn is in which BackupX folder, you can also use the above procedure to break-out that turn into its own saved scenario, but instead of copying the entire '..\My Documents\My Games\Wars of Napoleon\NGC\Saves\{scenario name}' folder into the new folder in 2. above, copy only the content of the BackupX folder into the new folder, while maintaining all the other steps as described.

If you want to keep a milestone save game, go to saved gamed folder, and zip the save game folder. IMO, older save game concept was better than this one in newer games.

You have just proven the point. Not intuitive at all....

Correct, it is not an intended feature of the game.

The question now is, would it be worth the effort of the devs to implement it? By this I mean, would it be something players would use:

Very often
Sometimes
Occasionally
Almost never
Never

I have hardly ever found a need for breaking a turn out of a running scenario, and that after 6 years of AGEod gaming.

The reason I know how this works, it because I use it for testing.

Thank You Thank you for your excellent explanation. I really appreciate you taking the time to write out this answer. You are just an Ace in my book.
