A Few Questions

Wed Dec 23, 2015 2:01 am

1) I'm apparently still not understanding how supply works for the French in Austria and Bavaria after, the Treaty of Pressburg fires, with Patch 1.02 Beta (December 21st). I built four depots in Bavaria to supply the army while it was taking Vienna. After the Treaty fires, Bavaria gets Tyrol, and Austrian territory is adjusted. The depots that I built convert to Bavarian control. I withdraw the army to the area in and around Regensburg, to wait out the winter, but it still starves to death. What am I doing wrong?

2) What's up with Eugene? He was Viceroy of Italy, while Napoleon was King, and Napoleon's stepson. The French player is unable to control this leader.

3) Just a statement - the DoWs on French allies is out of control.... the diplomacy issues need addressing.

After thinking about this, I think that the supply mechanisms will be an issue. How would the French keep an army supplied while overrunning Saxony and Prussia? After Prussia surrenders, and there's a Treaty of Tilsit, how do you supply the Army in Prussia and Saxony after the regions return to original ownership?

Then, there's the Russia issue. How would the French assemble an Army of 400,000 to 500,000 men on the border with Russia for an invasion, across non-controlled regions in their rear?

Maybe we need a second type of Depot:

1) Depot - Remains as-is currently in-game. Built in friendly-controlled region, and requires one Supply wagon, which is not consumed.

2) Magazine (New) – Can be built in any region, at any time, even in regions that are not friendly-controlled. Requires two Supply Wagons, which are consumed, generates a “Locked” garrison battalion in the Magazine, and can be captured. Magazines do not “flip” when peace is enacted – they do not revert to the owner of the region, like Depots do. Costs conscripts and money to build. This resolves the “Russian Invasion” issue, with a Magazine chain back to France to supply a French army on the border of Russia. Magazines cannot be built in Russia.

Just some thoughts.

Interesting thoughts. A reasonable number of turns to leave the country and supply rights should be an automatic part of peace treaties, though indefinitely long passage/supply rights would be a separate issue.

In my campaign, I formed the Duchy of Warsaw immediately and was able to draw supply from Polish cities. If you are attacking along the northern rout used in 1807-1808 through Danzig, Konigsburg, Eylau and Tilsit, you are then likely still at war with Prussia, and collecting their high value cities on the coast through their secondary Capitol. Or else, if you are at peace with Prussia, it is then likely that you choose a slightly more southernly rout into Russia directly.
"Here I am sitting at a comfortable table loaded heavily with books, with one eye on my typewriter and the other on Licorice the cat, who has a great fondness for carbon paper, and I am telling you that the Emperor Napoleon was a most contemptible person. But should I happen to look out the window, down upon Seventh Avenue, and should the endless procession of trucks and carts come to a sudden halt, and should I hear the sound of heavy drums and see the little man on his white horse, in his old and much-worn green uniform, then I don't know, but I am afraid that I would leave my books and the kitten and my home and everything else to follow him wherever he cared to lead. My own grandfather did this, and Heaven knows he was not born to be a hero."

The Saxony Flip:

Saxony joins the French and ejects my forces from the country (it shouldn't):

...and isn't so friendly to the French, even though they changed sides:

Again, the French forces now cannot trace supply back to France - the lines are too long, and no Depots can be built. The army will starve...

Ejection should not occur if the event works well...will check out that, France should normally get foreign access with the event.

Try the attached fix (and re-run event)

The turn before this, Oudinot was promoted to Marshall, but the rank symbol didn't update:

Oudinot was not promoted at all. As a ***Gen his base values are 2-2-2; or perhaps he was at *Gen before?

He was at *Gen, and promoted to Marshall by Event.

There are two events which promote Oudinot.

The first one fires in April 1807 promoting him to **Gen, if he is still a *Gen. The text is, "Nicolas Oudinot is promoted Corps General". The model file gives all French **Gen the title Marshal

The second fires in April 1810 promoting him to ***Gen if he is still a **Gen. The text message is, "Nicolas Oudinot is promoted Marshal (Army General)".

He cannot be promoted from *Gen to ***Gen, and I can't see any issues with the events.

Just previously you were in 1806. Are you now already into 1810?

It's 1807. He was a *Gen, and the Event said he was promoted to Marshall - look at the screenie - it says Marshall, but the symbol for him is General de Division.

I gave up trying to play the French, and started a Campaign playing the British, to see how the French AI works:

In 1805, the French AI should have one goal - capturing Vienna, but this doesn't happen:

Also, Cadiz seems to be the hot spot for French Generals on holiday:

His ** model file (3383FRANicolas Oudinot.mdl) has his Title parameter set to Marchal (Title = $Marshal). There are a number of French leaders with this trait. No idea if it's WAD.

I think what Oudinot is called is the least of the issues right now...

Yes, PhilT works the unit and model databases and not the AI programming.

Snapping at him and myself because we cannot solve all of your issues at once is not conducive to getting them solved.

I have a question - I'm sure I missed it but what short-cut key hides the units on the map so you can see just the map?

BTW - I seemed to have a work around on my crashes to desktop. One of the posters suggested to save after all orders, exit the game entirely, re-enter the game, then execute your orders. It takes 3 times as long because of the long load time but no crashes so far. Well, I did have another crash when I got lazy and on the third order execution it crashed.

I wasn't "snapping," at all. Show me where I was "snapping." I've gone out of my way to not be negative about any of this. And then I was scolded for pointing out an issue. I've been reporting the issues that I've found - like the Beta testers should have.

As a player, your tempo is faster than us (especially with this week of vacation!) so you might be under the impression that we don't fix or improve fast enough the game. But I can assure you that we are usually quite fast...

Before you go that far, try finding the gamedata/models directory and delete the models.cached file. Then open the game and see if you are still getting CTDs. Many of these are due to the models.cached not being in sync with actually model files. You get a mismatch CTD error that starts popping up. The models.cached file is then regenerated using the model files.

Not at all - I've been impressed by your response. I look at TEAW, which is a great game, and highly polished, and know that you guys will address the issues with WoN.

Okay, I will try that.

How about my first question - how do you hide units on the map?

Control Key + F4. Click both at same time. Do it again to show units again.

Thanks again! I deleted the models.cache file and I see another one was created so I'll report back if I crash.

A couple of observations:

1) Neuchatel (in-game region Neuchatel) should start both Campaign Games as a Prussian Region (yup - Prussian). The Treaty of Pressburg awarded this region to France.

2) In addition to Venezia, the Treaty of Pressburg also awarded Istria, Illyria, Dalmatia, and portions of Croatia, to the Kingdom of Italy (in-game regions Grado, Udine, Gorizia, Caporetto, Trieste, Postojna, Pazin, Pula, Idirja, Fiume, Kocevje, Cernica, Novo Mesto, Karlstadt, Ogulin, Brinje, Senj, Slunj, Gospic, Karlobag, Zadar, Sibenik, Split, Makarsko, Ploce, Ragusa, Kotor, Budva, and Bar).

Good points but for now disregarded

1) right, but nothing really happened there so I left it over to the Swiss...I am worried about the impact on Prussian AI if we give them territory so far from home (the people of Neuchatel chose Prussian overlords in 1707 just for the reason they were far away from them!)

2) indeed, the portions of croatia - dalmatia was under 'protection' of the KOI...the terms did not really imply ownership transfer, although in the facts the French sent troops there (division Molitor) to fight the Russians and Montnenegrans landed there by Adm. Senyavin's fleet...I kept that transfer of ownership with the Schönnbrün treaty.

Can be changed, no big deal
