At the risk of being accused of breaking my own rule (but heck, I'm the tournament director...), I'll just say that Ace and Jim both came out swinging as soon as the main armies unlocked. It was a bit like playing a game of online poker, and watching everyone go all-in on the first hand.

Big fights in Manasas and Alexandria, and the total losses gives a good idea about who came away with most of the chips. That said, the game still goes on.

At turn 18, Ace and Jim-NC can go ahead and post screens and talk maneuvers for these explosive 6 turns.

So is one of the games really still averaging about a turn a week?

Jim and I are at the pace of little less than 3 per week. I guess we could speed up a little. I don't know about other games. If it is going by turn/week, they should really speed up or it will take a year to finish their game :bonk:

Yep 3 a week sounds a good solid pace. We are at 42 now so about 13 to go. Be a shame to have to wait until after easter for the next round though if one game has still not hit 12 turns after 2 months. That would imply another 6 months to go...

Good point, I won't be there obviously. I am just concerned about the project as a whole from a community perspective. I'd like to see the final result before my eyesight fails. I'm 39...

I couldn't agree more. That's why I would like to encourage everyone to write short AAR summary of previous turns, so community can get involved more.

P.S.

Are you doing that badly you are sure you won't advance?

I certainly got off to a slower start than you did. Otherwise I guess I'll just have to wait and see. In theory I guess there is the case to make that if our side of the draw has no effect on the other then the 6 turn updates could be posted earlier so there is something to read, otherwise this is going to be a very quiet thread for a while yet. Be a shame for interest to fade. It might inspire the slow game to catch up.

Ace vs Jim - turns 1-7

Tue Nov 04, 2014 4:29 pm

Turns 1-6

First, general strategy. In the first 6 turns, there was no big battles, and these were my plans for the match. First I had to secure the West by purchasing enough units and ships for defense purposes. Aggressive CSA player can land at Cairo in the early turns virtually unopposed. So, I purchased enough units and ships for eventual counterattack there, while placing my main purchases in the East.
I took all my financial options, and used the cash to buy lot of artillery before volunteer call.
Early battles in the East were mainly skirmishes where I secured Harper's Ferry and Winchester.

Turn 7

CSA has basically two armies in the East, AoP and ArmyofShenandoah while I have only one. But Manassas event puts the pressure on the CSA player to heavily defend Manassas. That leaves me place to maneuver around it while he is basically locked there defending that dreaded 10 NM hit for the Union. So, I detached part of my force to Winchester to defend against expected counterattack, while I detached Henzelman with orders to move from Loudon to position himself between Johnson and Beauregard.

CSA made an attempt at the Valley, only to be stopped by Patterson.

AAR Skibear vs Seraphim part 1

Tue Nov 04, 2014 4:41 pm

OK,

For what I know, so far our game with Skibear was not as interesting as the match Ace vs Jim-NC. Indeed we had a slow beginning with nothing to report the first 6 turns and only a few actions later.

I will still give you an AAR, here it is.

In Virginia, no big battle but several cavalry raids and railroad sabotages. Union briefly took Strasburg and blow up the depot, the militia defending it and the railroad before retreating.

The most notable move is a tentative by a small force led by Erasmus D. Keyes to flank CSA's positions via Covington VA. This incursion was defeated by "Stonewall" Jackson. We can't said it was a bloodbath however.

Only 180 casualties for each side...
Well, when even Jackson, with a big numerical advantage, inflict such few damages, it's not a surprise that our game had the fewest casualties of all.

The more interesting action of our game so far was in Indiana.

Several CSA's brigades, led by J.O. Shelby landed at Posey IN and took Evansville. The locked Union's force that was here took a, small, beating and lost their supplies wagons.

That was the only success of the operation because as you see it, Skibear counterattacked with overwhelming forces : Grant, Lyon, Porter and much of the Union's troop in Missouri, Indiana and Kentucky.

As a siege would have been too dangerous with Grant in command of the Union's forces, I ordered a retreat with the help of Hollins's fleet and CSS Manassas.

I the west, with the Union's forces in Indiana, Springfield MO is safe and Price is invading Kansas.

Other than that, Skibear took Jacksonville FL.

Here is the result screen.

Ace vs Jim - turn 8

To my surprise , he didn't remained stationary at Manassas. Instead he choose to to attack Heinzelman.

When I saw this battle, at first I was disappointed with myself for putting Heintzelman to offensive posture without need. If he remained in defensive posture he would have won that battle. But than I saw the potential in this defeat. He has moved Beauregard North. Jonhnson is still in Strasburg after last turn loss and he will probably rail him to Manassas since Manassas is the focal point of all early movements in the East. So, I saw potential for big turning move in Virginia. It was a risky move, but given how out of position he was, not a hazardous move.

On a side note, Sam Houston event fired this turn, giving 2 cavalry units at Dallas. Since I intended to use some of my Eastern forces for seaborne operations, landing expedition in Texas seemed like logical choice in the ong run.

Any battle lost to Patterson should be an automatic -100 extra VP I think. For balance the same should apply to a loss to Floyd. ;)

Ace vs Jim - turn 9

Tue Nov 04, 2014 7:09 pm

Last turn McDowell move made situation in Virginia dangerous for both sides. He moved Beauregard to Harper's Ferry presumably to isolate Patterson, and Johnson to Manassas, as expected.

The question is what he will do now. He can:

1) Attack McDowell to dislodge him from Richmond Manassas rail. That was my intention all along, to make him attack me instead other way around.
2) He can position himself West and East of Manassas to block my supply line. I am prepared for this as I brought many supply wagons with me, and I am within striking distance of Fredericksburg and Richmond, and can always bail out by the sea.
3) He can attack Alexandria, Washington and Annapolis. I used Henzelman and Patterson troops to man Washington and Annapolis forts so they can't be stormed - he can't make a siege long behind my lines, and have ordered everyone else to Alexandria. It is the most logical target. He knows McDowell can't reach it, but he doesn't knows new Army of fresh recruits under Butler is ready to be deployed.

He opted to assault Alexandria. It was a logical choice as it was empty of troops. But that's the beauty of WEGO system. It wasn't empty by the time Beauregard marched from Harper's Ferry to Alexandria:

Notice the damage 200 entrenched guns do in clear terrain. It was Picket's charge in 61'.

And now, what to do. He still has sizeable force at Manassas. Attacking it across the river will bring lot of casualties for uncertain results, but if I can't grab Manassas now, then I'll never grab it in before October when the press start to howl. It wasn't my intention to grab it, but it seamed a waste to miss this opportunity. So everyone, from all directions, on to Manassas.

Hooker finishes Beauregard before striking with McDowell on Johnson from two sides:

Now, what to do next. I saw two possibilities. Leave battered Confederate armies in the Valley, and go after Richmond, or try to finish off CSA fighting capacity. He evacuated capital to Atlanta this turn while still having 1 division in Fredericksburg, and 2 at Richmond, so it made my decision easier. I aimed at blocking his retreat by taking the Valley.

Felix vs Liberty

Tue Nov 04, 2014 9:01 pm

General Strategy
Very close to Ace’s initial comments:1) Purchase sufficient land and naval units to hold and counter-attack in Missouri and Tennessee.2) East receives main builds.
3) Build artillery east and west.
4) Find a way to get more out of the Union Blue Water Fleet.
As to my opponent - expected Liberty to be very aggressive.
----------------
Turn 4 - First Action in Harpers Ferry - Union captured and destroyed defending militia, but took heavy elite casualties (330).
----------------

Turn 5 - Finally Lincoln’s Call for Volunteers - late occurrence meant the volunteer brigades would not be un-locked until E Aug 61!
I’ve written about ‘Ace’s CSA Exploit’ (Stockade Warfare). I know of only three players who believe in using in a PBEM - Ace, myself and Liberty! And so it began - Liberty captured Ft. Cobb, Ft. Supply, Ft Gibson and Ft. Baxter; USA captured Ft Sherman. CSA gained 14 VP and USA lost 19 VP - a 33 VP difference.
USA also landed and captured Appalachicola - an action which will have consequences.
USA built North-East Iron Works (besides WS Production this will eventually provide 50$ a turn)
---------------

Turn 6 - CSA continued to capture stockades (3) and USA captured (1) - another 22 VP difference.

Small naval action - CSA attacked USA naval units supporting Appalachicola. CSA repulsed with even losses.

And Liberty bombarded and landed in Cairo - before main garrison was positioned ... .

Ace vs Jim - turn 13

Tue Nov 04, 2014 9:10 pm

After 2 turns of dodging fight, this is situation in the East:

He is blocked from the rest of Confederacy, and it would be prudent for him to try to escape through WW. But Johnson is in striking range of DC and can go for all or nothing. I better put an extra brigade there so he doesn't pull of a surprise. I'll stick them inside the fort so I don't loose fight by accident.

East front was not only active. Lyon captured Fayetteville, Miles landed in Texas, while Foote controlled Mississippi and Cumberland river to block any Confederate action there.

Johnson opted to go after DC, but all he got was this dangerous situation where tired Army of Shenandoah sits way off nearest friendly units, with Montgomery, MD the only route of escape, and I am ready to punish him for it:

It was Grant that commanded the attack, Butler was hiding inside Washington, unwilling to provide support.
Remarkably, Johnson managed to avoid Hooker trying to intercept him in Montgomery, MD for the kill.

That's it for now. It's been a bloody into to the game!...

AAR Skibear vs Seraphim part 2

Sun Nov 16, 2014 4:01 pm

I write this post to tell you that I have nothing to report.

Just kidding, I do have some little things to report but our game with Skibear had a really slow beginning. So no crushing victory nor destruction of the main CSA's army here. Not that I intend to criticize what appear to be my ticket for the next round.

At turn 12 Shelby's forces were in bad position in Indiana, but with the help of Hollins's fleet and CSS Manassas they were able to withdraw to Nashville without problems.

Unfortunately for me, with Grant, Lyon and a lot of troops in Indiana, Skibear was able to launch offensives operations.

The first saw the Union's capture of Island 10 despite one full CSA's division contesting the landing.

After that Skibear landed Grant at Ft Henry TN when I was expecting an attack along the Mississippi.

In the west the CSA made progress in Missouri and Kansas but Polk failed to take Lexington MO. Worse the sudden bad weather depleted the CSA's supplies in the zone, forcing the troops to withdraw.

The others theatres of operations remain unchanged : skirmishes in Virginia resulted in no territorial changes and no other amphibious landing were made by the Union.

Here is the result screen.

You have to feel sorry for Skibear's draw. Going against former champ and eventually defeating him is not enough. He has to defeat him with bigger margin than mine vs Jim.

It's like playing against Andre Agassi and comparing your score vs Pete Sampras playing in another bracket. It's like he is playing 2 heavyweights instead of one. Tough draw to say the least...

On the flipside with no expectation of victory I can just focus on enjoying the game and see what the result is. But yeah its a little weird that almost nothing I will do will matter if Jim implodes spectacularly. We'll see, there is always another game on the horizon.

I'll let Seraphim take the lead on the narrative as I haven't got the files that far back for screenshots (plus we were doing these turns back in early September & I can barely remember what I had for breakfast̷) . But should probably try to add a bit to fill in the view from the 'other side of the hill' on the key events. Indeed he caught me off guard with his sneaky raid into Indiana. We lost a couple of small brigades in the training camp down by the river. Obviously alarm bells were ringing hard and to prevent him running amok in the interior we pulled in as much as we could from all directions. Lyon cancelled his advance on Springfield (though that was looking like a 1-1 long shot anyway) and Grant brought a division from the south, with a further contingent from Ohio. We were trying to turn a raid into an opportunity for an early victory. The door was left slightly open to get out to the east (in reality deeper into trouble̷) with the only other route out by river. This was covered by the Union river flotilla, unfortunately even with offensive patrols orders the game mechanism makes it a bit too easy (IMHO) to evade a battle and slip past. I know the river can be wide but still...

Anyway, crisis averted Grant had a nice Corps-sized force assembled at the right place at the right time. We had just enough intel to see the CSA fleet ended up at Donelson so Island No.10 was the obvious target and fell fairly easily, but instead of taking the next obvious route down the river into the heart of darkness where unknown trouble lurked unscouted, we decided to do a bit of a shimmy and hit Fort Henry. This was relatively risk free rather than landing straight on Donelson unscouted (the CSA fleet had moved on), while allowing us to move fast on Donelson next turn if it looked good before any fresh troops arrived from Memphis, or change the plan if looked like a hornets nest. From the looks of things the dummy worked and Donelson was looking a good prospect at this point.

Out east a bit of a Mexican standoff, McDowell in Harpers, Johnson in Winchester, Banks in Alexsandria & Beauregard in Manasas. Nobody strong/bold enough to break the deadlock for now…

Last turn sent. Game over once Havi processes this evening. Now all thats to do is wait for everybody to catch up and to thank Havi for being a great efficient host and Seraphim for being a speedy, cunning and clever opponent with plenty of surprises and frustrations along the way. Rollercoaster game, but will have to wait for an AAR now...
