Turn 31 - Situation (2)

Tue Jun 17, 2014 10:07 pm

At Williamsburg the situation is always the same :

But along the Potomac, there is an important operation underway : GrayFox has left the Shenandoah to concentrate in Annapolis :

I can't see Grant anymore but I suppose he is with the force in Anne Arundel on which I have very few information :

I see two options for GrayFox :

1) A hard and frontal attack in Alexandria or Leesburg (Alexandria would be a better choice as the terrain is clear).
2) Use of the 3 fleets in Annapolis (Worden's fleet, Palmer's fleet and a transport) to make a landing along the eastern coast.

Turn 31 - Situation (3)

Tue Jun 17, 2014 10:35 pm

On my side I'm considering two options :

- Strengthen Winchester and the Potomac defense line, create a mobile force under Jackson somewhere in Virginia to be able to react quickly to a landing.

- Strengthen the Potomac defense line and launch a counter-attack in the Shenandoah with Harper's Ferry as objective.

This second option has the drawback of moving away from the Virginian railroad network an important part of my army but would shorten my front if successful.

No fight (except for the destruction of one of my partisan unit). The main events of this turn are
- The Kentucky chooses its side (Union) and is becoming available to play.
- The successful patrol I sent behind Union lines in Maryland to have more information on Grayfox army in Annapolis area. And I made a frightful discovery :cthulhu: :

I have 600 more VP but the difference in VP gain/turn has dropped following the entry of the Kentucky into the Union (Bowling Green is Confederate but Louisville and Lexington are adding to the North VP).

Iowa :

Stand Watie is moving toward Des Moines strategic town.

Kentucky :

I will move the forces I have kept on this theatre to occupy Paducah (important position on the Mississippi), reinforce Bowling Green, besiege Munfordville and get some information on the size of the Union force in Louisville.

Williamsburg :

Due to the danger in Northern Virginia (see below) I will not try to reinforce my force there. Anyway, Grayfox should not be able to attack this turn with the troops in Fort Monroe (and I'm still unable to know their strength, given the size of the army in Annapolis they might be not as big as I was suspecting).

Northern Virginia :

GrayFox has a huge force in Anne Arundel region (Annapolis) :

He has already created corps so he will be able to move all of them together at the same speed by using the "synchronize movement" order. This is a real threat and I'm still thinking how I will respond to it. Obviously I will need to make use of the MSG (March to the Sound of Guns) rule.

In Iowa Stand Watie is besieging Des Moines.

In Kentucky, I'm holding Paducah and Bowling Green and laying siege to Munfordville. Forrest is at Louisville to get more information on the troops holding the city (there is a 500 points force Inside it).

In Virginia, I moved Jackson and Lee behind my line of defense on the Potomac to take advantage of the MSG :

As soon as Munfordville will be mine, I'll move a division to besieged Louisville. Lexington is undefended at the moment, I'll try to capture it next turn (because loyalty is < 50%, I can't capture it only with cavalry, I need to bring an infantry regiment).

Virginia :

As mentioned in a previous post, I was envisaging the possibility of a landing by GrayFox, but not in Edenton. I think he has made a good move :
- Instead of attacking a very strong position on the Potomac, he will fight troops not yet entrenched.
- There is more opportunities for side movement around defensive position in this part of Virginia.
- My supply line between Wilmington and Richmond is threatened.
- Norfolk will be very difficult to defend.
- I will have to use all my rail transport points to redeploy my forces and I won't be able to use this kind of move elsewhere (not really a problem because the other theaters are quiet).

I think I could beat the forces he has left in Maryland but I must move South to protect my supply and Richmond. Moreover, as Washington is no more the capital, the benefit would not be very important (a good decision of GrayFox to move the capital to New-York [once again, I think the loss of NM is too easily compensated]).

Virginia :

After much thinking I have decided to set my defense line on the Blackwater river and to leave Norfolk (impossible to defend, it would require to have a sizable force in Suffolk to keep my supply line open) :

Before leaving the city, the depot has been destroyed. Grayfox is now in control of Norfolk where he has sent two corps (Grant and Keyes).

I sent Joseph Johnston on the Potomac as army commander of a small defensive force.

Munfordville is mine and Des Moines garrison has been destroyed.

I'm also building two divisions in Bowling Green that will be sent to Virginia.

This is almost more interesting from your perspective than from GF's, even though we're seeing the (eventual) proof to his eastern strategy in motion.

Keep at it, gentlemen. :)

@ Merlin :
Thanks for your encouragement.
I think GF's eastern strategy is possible because of the move of the capital to New-York. And this is a problem of the game : historically, the political cost of such a change would have been huge and the penalty in the game is not sufficient (it is too easy to recover from the loss of NM).

@ Havi :
Thanks for the chearing, GF strategy is really challenging.

To stop a 9000 stack, I don't need to have as much forces as I am taking advantage of the defensive position and I will use MSG to concentrate my troops (Lee and Jackson are very powerful at this strategy) : I think you can't expect to win a battle if you don't have at least a 1.5 to 1 advantage, 2 to 1 if your opponent is entrenched.
However, the move of Grayfox has forced me to move my corps out of my prepared position so I won't be able to take advantage of the entrenchment before a few turns. So, yes, next turn could be challenging and put me in a bad position. Let's hope most of his corps will be inactive

Indeed, City Point is a weak point and I was already thinking to it yesterday evening. By moving some forces out of James City, GrayFox allows me to take a division from Beauregard's army and I have another division available.

One of the weakness of the South is the lack of 2* leaders which is a limit to the number of corps you can create.

Yes, shear number will crush the South at the end. But this is true with or without eastern strategy. What is important is to stretch the Confederate defenses with landings and coordinate them with your offensives in Virginia or in the Mississippi/Kentucky/Tennessee area.

I'm in a bad position as Manchester is under threat by Union, I must keep my supply line to Goldsboro (NC) open and ideally Jackson should take some rest to recover from last turn casualities. Moreover I would like to keep the Blackwater river as my defense line. Obviously I won't be able to satisfy to all these constraints and I will have to do some heartbreaking choices.

As the Union must cross the James River to reach Manchester, I'm considering the possibility to use my Virginia Squadron to block the river (4 ships = 90% to block the move). A tempting move is to cut the supply line from Norfolk to City Point but it will be difficult due to the support (i.e. MSG) between corps.

A fight took place in the James Estuary :

Something strange happened when the Virginia Squadron (Buchanan's force) retreated : it entered Williamsburg Harbour despite the fact its only exit/entry point is the York Estuary ! This is annoying as I was hoping to use the fleet to block movement beetween City Point and Manchester. GrayFox offered courteously to redo the turn or let my fleet move around Fort Monroe without firing at it. But we will continue as if this retreat was correct.

I'm guilty for the delay (it's soccer world cup at the moment and I had a few engagements...).

To reach Richmond, GF has to navigate on the James Estuary and he would be under the guns of my force in Williamsburg. Well... it's my guess but I'm not so sure because I'm not completely mastering the double adjacency rule (that's why I'm really annoyed by the retreat of my squadron in Williamsburg because it was covering Richmond access).

But given the size of his force, GF could take the risk and stake everything (Union force would be weakened by the opportunity fire but still strong enough to take the city against a small force). As I don't know the "psychology" of my opponent I can't assess if he is the one to take this kind of risk. So I'm considering the possibility to move a division coming from Kentucky to Richmond to reinforce the small force already there.

But doing this will just add more constraint to the problem of "sealing" the Union in a pocket (see my previous post). Too much to do and not enough resources : I have to choose between being very conservative and let the initiative to GF or take some risks to try to thwart his plan.

I'm considering another option : move my capital to Atlanta. At least if Richmond is captured I would not suffer from the NM cost.

That seems to me like it could be a wise move. You are so far ahead in VP's that all you have to do to achieve a game victory is simply survive. Easy when you say it quickly

Whyte (VA) :

There is a full union division in Whyteville (see resolution post above) with the exhausted cavalry force that has flee from Lexington (NC) area. As my attack on Suffolk has failed, Lee will move back behind the blackwater river. But, because MC is 0% (despite the fact Lee was ten days in the area with a superior force :tournepas ), he may switch to attack mode and be forced into a fight.
