Understanding replacements

Mon Apr 30, 2007 11:07 am

I understand the top number (38) is the replacements that I have chosen and are in reserve because that's what the mouse rollover says. Does this mean that I have ample replacements to fill the needs at the moment? I assume when this drops back to a red zero, that I'm in trouble.

What does the bottom number mean? Because it is so high, does that mean I really need to increase line infantry dramatically?

The bottom number shows the strength of your fielded units of the particular type.

In the picture you posted you have well over 10% of your total strength in replacements, so I'd say you're covered (based on some posts by Pocus and the beta testers)

In the FAQ, the following apppears :

Q : What is the difference between reinforcements and replacements?
A : Replacements are what you need to flesh out depleted regiments, generally the ideal is to have 10% of your total force available in replacements (you can see the numbers on the replacements screen, it tells you how many replacement "points" you have, and the max number you can have, so you generally want to try and keep 10% of the big number in stock). Reinforcements are the new units you'll need to increase the power and size of your armies and garrison your rear areas.

I am at my Replacement screen but do not see any "replacement points" I have. All I see in the white boxed area under the Replacement boxes is Planned Balance : Dollars , Conscripts & Tons Of War Supplies
I am using the latest patch 1.02a, but I believed I started this campaign under version 1.01a.

Thanks

The count is next to the "pigeon-hole" for each category of replacements.

That sounds like the wrong screen. Hit the F3 key, that should get you to the correct one.

I am at the replacement screen for sure, as it has the "planned balance" info. I see that with no problem.
But where should I see the replacement points or is it not called replacement points.

Thanks

Looking at this image captured from one of my test campaigns

Image

we see that for each of the unit types available to me, there is a number of existing replacements (already purchased in the previous turn) and one showing the total number of replacements still available to me. Is your replacement screen looking something like that in the picture?

P.S. could someone help me to post this pic as a thumbnail please?

Snoob,

Absolutely, the same replacement screen I get.

It looks like I got caught up with the verbiage of the display.

I guess I was looking for a one liner that would say " Replacement Points = xx % "

Whew, it's great to know that I am not having a problem :)

Thanks guys,

Suggestion for screen capture software with no nag tags - or any catch - FSCapture.

http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm

I know; slightly off topic. :siffle:

----------

As the turns go by, the number of potential purchases (the bottom number) goes up - the question to be asked is where does that number come from.

That number is the total element count on map at the time.

The top number is the stockpile of replacements available.

The number you have decided to buy is in the lower tooltip as you mouse over that replacement 'unit'.

UI Request:

Can we see the 'purchases' this turn number between the top 'pool' number and the bottom 'in the field' number?

While we are counting elements;

I do wish the tooltip for a unit, stack, or 'ctrl click' included "Total Elements".

Or maybe we could see the element count in the unit info box to the lower right?

Would also to see in the Tab tooltip...

18 units in a division - be easier to optimize if I had an element counter tooltip in all unit tooltip encounters, amof...

:)

Ok, this has been bugging me for a couple of days ever since I figured out how the bottom number was calculated.

a) Why does the number decrease when you purchase more? It's not like you are removing elements from the map.

b) Why are you prohibited from purchasing when the two numbers equal? (What does the number of reserves have anything to do with the number of existing elements?)

I confess that I find this screen confusing too. I guess the tooltip confuses me. In the big screenshot above, the mouse is pointing at the number 35, but the tooltip doesn't explain what the 35 means. Instead it tells me stuff about the number the mouse is *not* over -- that I've got 2 replacements in reserve. It also supplies info about the number of envelopes I've ordered; in the case of the screenshot, the player hasn't ordered any yet this turn. So what exactly does the 35 mean?

I have a similar question on the reinforcement screen. The tooltip (and the manual) describe three of the numbers, not all four. What's the top (big) number mean? I think the manual describes the following 3 numbers, but I'm not sure.

Also, is it enough to be in the same region as a depot or level 2+ city to qualify for the city/depot bonus, or must one be physically inside the city?

And if one is in a supplied region with no city/depot/fort, one still receives the 5% base (2.5% for Union)?

It is the Total in the Replacement Pool.

Here is a new screen for example:

In that screenshot, I have 229 Line Infantry available in the pool
I would be able to buy a total of 229 Line Infantry for that turn (if I had the resources).
That number (229) comes from drafts and mobilization.

Envelopes represent Replacements Requested to be built.
In the tool-tip we see "Replacements requested to be built: 5".
Also see the bottom number (the Pool) decreased by 5 to 224.
By placing an envelope in the slot he is ordering replacements for Next Turn.

"Replacements already in reserve: 91" is what I have "on the map" ready to re-build damaged units.
Next turn, there will be no envelopes, the "Replacements already in reserve" will increase by 5 to 96.

The bottom number (224) will adjust to show the decrease/increase in the pool, depending on any drafts or mobilizations etc..

Example from bottom screenshot:
In Reserve "on map"_______Requested________In Pool (after request)
Army HQ: 1--------------------2----------------3
Div HQ:_ 11--------------------2----------------22
Elite Inf: 8---------------------5----------------53
Line Inf: 91--------------------5---------------224

Next turn would have "In Reserve":
Army HQ: 3 (1+3)
Div HQ:__13 (11+2)
Elite Inf:_13 (8+5)
Line Inf:_96 (91+5)

Not trying to belittle anyone with the math, just wanted to break it it down for any future new players.

Ah, OK, that's more or less what I guessed, but the tooltips confused me a bit. Many thanks for the thorough explanation.

One further question, though. I read people saying I should allocate about 10% of something to replacements. I take it that's 10% of the big "pool" number at the bottom of each "shelf" of this screen? So, using your bottom screenshot, maybe 1 naval engineer and 2 or 3 heavy arty? I get that -- but I would've thought one would allocate a percentage of troops in the field rather than troops in the pool. Not a big deal; if allocating 10% of the "pool" number will keep me in the right ballpark, I can handle that.

Also, it would be nice to see some overall summary of how many replacements I've used in the course of a campaign.

But these are nits. I love this game so far!

I believe your available pool is a direct correlation of your on map units. So if you build 15 new line regiments, your available line infantry pool points will grow by x amount. I’m not sure if each on map element translates to 1 available point or more than 1, but it is tied to your on map army as far as I can tell.

So troops in the field are what your 10% is ultimately tied to. I’m just not sure how troops in the field translates into your available pool points.

and how the system allocates these replacements points at the end of every turn?
it seems that units under 'passive' status get preferential allocation, but are there any other rules for allocation?
being suplpied? closer to major cities?
thanx

the tooltip is missing an explaination right.

the number is the number of elements on the map you have that can receive this kind of replacements, time a coefficient, which is set to 100% for both side for now.

So if you have 200 regular regiments on the map, you are allowed to stockpile up to 200 replacements for them.

TC 237 has offered the most helpful explanation that I've seen. But this is still way too confusing and complicated. Is there any way to show something more practical: Number of units in the game needing replacements; number of replacements selected for next turn?

So if you have 200 regular regiments on the map, you are allowed to stockpile up to 200 replacements for them.

Ahhh! That clears it up for me. So the big (bottom) number on the replacement screen -- the pool -- is indeed directly tied to the number of units already deployed on the battlefield. Now it makes sense to me that I would be sure to allocate a certain percentage of that pool to replacements, since the pool in effect represents the size of my army. Many thanks.

And yep, there's a missing tool-tip here. I bet it would help newbs to have a tooltip over the "pool" number. Not a big deal for most, I suppose.
