Playing as France, I completed the Suez Canal more than a year ago,but I can't can't get my ships to travel through. I am playing 1.02. Even when I plot a course up to the Canal and then through, the ship will travel around Africa. Is there something else I need to do?
I also just got the message that Egypt has ceded its control of the canal to Great Britain. Is that strictly a flavor event or does it have an impact on the game?

We just had this event fired on our MP. It has a tooltip problem (chrome) but otherwise plotting movement passes over the canal (v1.03). Please make sure you have control of the structure and it is activated (mouse on the Suez structure and make sure it is still French and checked: green).

Funny I had the exact same problem two days ago with my French game (playing with 1.03 last version).
I could not use the canal even if constructed, open and controlled. But I think I may have an explanation: (to be confirmed by dev)
I had not discovered the Suez Canal Tech, the turn when I discovered it I tried to use the canal and ... it worked ! So maybe you should try this.

Although that would be cool, Sir Garnet, I find it more realistic for the era to be like ON and OFF, as abstracted. Filtering the traffic would have supposed a permanent huge garrison with guns that says "you yes, you not". Instead, by simply shutting it down for all in times of crises you avoid this problem. Moreover, I believe it was the same juridical nature of the Suez Canal that it was supposed to be neutral, even if times of war, with very few exceptions.

So, could it be that you can only use the canal, being either France or a third party, after you have developed the Suez canal tech?

Well, nope. I checked, I have researched the Suez canal tech and still cannot cross. BTW, I am not playing France and have neither passgae nor supply rights with her. May that be the obstacle?
I believe as Greece I tried to pass (set for testing the movement) and the days to the Red Sea seemed few, so I believe I could. Does it have to do with cordial relations perhaps? (I am not even sure Greece has them, but I think they do)

Humm well sorry about that....
I will be especially regarding next time I build it. For now I don't have any new idea. Something I think that needs to be clarified.
Perhaps France is out of money and has turned it off in your game. For everyone.

Yes that means it is open. When I noticed a change it was explicit. The travel time changed from 80days or so down to 4 days. And the travel line changed also from going all around Africa to crossing directly through Suez... so no doubt here. It waas not working and then it was. But why??....
I was beginning to think no one else was having any problems with this. I have upgraded to 1.03 and tried to use the canal without success. When I click on the location of the canal, it shows it as green which should mean active. But when I try to click on it, I get a message that you can not re-activate if workers are on strike. I had never checked the canal before, but years ago I built a cotton field in Egypt and it seems like it went on strike and never came off. I basically forgot about it, and it looks like it now belongs to Egypt.
To address another point that others have brought up, I had the Suez Canal Tech before I built the canal. I assumed it was a prerequisite. So I'm still stumped.

I also click on the Red Sea (Suez Bay, or sg like that) but my fleet goes around the whole continent, amking the duration of the journey 30-40 days.
If Greece can pass, why couldn't a major nation? Relations between France and Russia?

The Devs might also want to look at the Kiel Canal. My Prussian/German ships can move straight into Hamburg from the Baltic without having to travel around the Jutland Peninsula. I have to manually route my ships into the North Sea since it appears the game thinks the canal has been built, even though it has not.
