Still learing. Arty question

Tue Apr 03, 2012 3:30 am

Ok so here's another one for you guys. I read in the manual that an entrenched battery along a river will bombard enemy fleets and stop enemy supply. However in a recent AI game I took Fort Monroe trapping a union fleet up by Richmond that I guess didn't want to run pass the fort so just stayed there turn after turn. I had an extra coastal artillery so I figured I would place it next to the union fleet and pound it or force it to run pass the fort. I found that nothing happened to the fleet it just sat there until I finally had to move a fleet into to destroy it.

I may very well be wrong on this one, but I think the fleet needs to move. Otherwise, no conflict.

Yes they do need to move, and it has to be to a water zone still next to the land region. Also if you place the guns under a general and he is inactive the guns will NOT fire.

Unfortunately, ships have to be moving to get bombarded. Also, the guns must be active, and entrenched to level 3 (IIRC) or above. The bombard button must be pushed, and the dreaded DAR (double adjacency rule) must be fulfilled (it says that the land region must border both water regions the ships are moving through to be able to fire).

The good news is, the ships will slowly lose supplies, and be forced to retreat past your guns (depending on which option you chose for naval treatment). The bad news is, it might take a while (depends on how many transports they had with them).
Remember - The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Collective A- for everybody.

Just to be concise, The two regions do NOT have to both be water regions, one of them may be a land region with a harbor, as long as the bombarding unit is adjacent to both the region with the harbor and the water region, and the water and land regions thru which is being moved are adjacent to each other.

This can surprise people a lot when they discover what regions are adjacent to each other. Unfortunately you cannot see this readily on the map; you need a unit to show you.
Put the unit into a region you want to check, click on the unit and press <shift>.
You will see a number of colored rays emitting from your unit.
The colors have the following meanings:
 • Brown: unit may move into that region over land
 • Light Blue: unit may move to that region, but must cross a river to do so
 • Dark Blue: unit may embark onto transports into these water regions

The rays are often a bit off-center and it can be a bit difficult to understand to where they are pointing unless you pay attention to their colors
Example: The Union controls Baltimore and has it garrisoned with among other things coastal artillery which is entrenched at level 3 or higher with the bombardment button pressed. The CSA controls Annapolis and has a fleet in the bay in front of Annapolis, which is also adjacent to Baltimore. When the fleet in front of Annapolis moves from the bay(adjacent to Baltimore) into the Annapolis harbor(also adjacent to Baltimore) it will be bombarded through the DAR.

Another good example is Docking into Columbus KY and having Island 10 bombard you. Man did I nerd rage after finding that out in a PBEM. :grr:

The ship was just sitting in one region and not moving. Thanks for the insight so many things i still do not know but getting plenty of practice against athena before taking on a human opponent and getting a fit of nerd rage like rattler.
