Is there anything that can be done to speed turn calculation ?

Fri Jun 10, 2011 12:41 pm

Greetings.
I just bought the game and start a campaign as Japan, in order to be able to start slowly and discover the system one step at a time.

The game seems to me very interesting so far. But i have some concern about the calculation time between turn.

It takes around 2min30s on my quad 6600 vista 2.4Ghz for a turn to be completed. It seems not so long on paper. I already played (and loved) some games with quite long turn, such as Matrix war in the pacific.

But, if you combine it with the fact that a turn is only 15 days (24 turns a year !), it makes the feeling that the game is really, really slow. (I know, playing japan is also not the best way to have an interesting game at the start, i'am aware of that).

I'am working in software development and i know it is not always easy to enhance performance of a software but i think it would be a good idea to try to improve turn time in future patch ?

- Does the software use multicore for turn calculation for example ?
- Perhaps it is possible to start some calculation for AI during player's turn instead of waiting the end of turn button.

Some things like that.

Also, perhaps a one month turn may have been enough. (But it is probably impossible to change at this state of the développement).

Ps: Also, the game is really long to launch, but as it is probably a way to speed the future behaviour during gameplay, it is far less a problem.

About game launch, it really depends... My quad core just need 25 seconds to load it up, my laptop a bit more.
As for turn processing time, the big plan would be to thread the AI, but ... don't hold your breath, there is not even the guarantee it can be done.

Are you implying that there is nothing that can be done about the slow turn resolution speed? Currently I stopped playing as I heard rumors that a patch release addressing this problem could be imminent. I would assume that such a patch addressing this problem would have to be imminent anyway because there are a lot of people including myself who feel that waiting 1-3 minutes between each turn makes the game intolerable.

Over at the Paradox forum I've read, that the turn resolution speed may have something to do with the level of intelligence of the AI. I think it could be worth to wait a minute or three for not having stupid AI and a game with such a depth of gameplay.

I have 3 AGEOD games (ACCW, BOA2 and PON) and will soon be buying a few more now that I have had time to immerse in the 3 various AGEOD worlds I already own. I have a brand new MacBook Pro with plenty of gas and for sure PON especially takes the longest in loading and turn execution - and as a result also runs hotter and uses battery quicker if I am on the move.

But, all other aspects of AGEOD games considered, it's ok with me. So many other pluses - price, the developers wonderful year upon year updates and online dialogue/support, the quality of games, so many time periods to play and learn with similar design and UI, the very active and helpful folks in the forums.

And as has been noted, (and with no disrespect for other views) I think also the time is another plus looked at in another way rather than "intolerable" - perhaps indeed a reflection of some darn good AI thinking going on. I always check the option to allow longer "thinking" and just slow down with Athena which is getting easier at 56...

Hello i dont know if its my imagination but going through a few turns it seems that the time it takes to do a turn varies. Sometimes its quite quick, others laboriously slow. I always find something to do if it does take awhile. I have a Core 2 computer.

Over on the Elemental War of Magic forums, Brad Wardell (CEO of Stardock) shared with us forum lurkers how difficult it was to make the AI run on another thread. But in the end I believe he managed to get it done.

Elemental is also a turn based game, though I'm obviously not comparing the resources Stardock has to your own. Though maybe there is something there to be shared? I really don't know how things work in the gaming world.

Perhaps now that AGEOD is Paradox France, there might be enough resources to send Pocus to the Stardock HQ and work something out.

Don't anyone take me too seriously though...I don't even know if it is even possible to share that kind of experience or if because they are different engines then it is pretty much apples and oranges.

I have Kaspersky Internet Security as antivirus and internet protection. It will slow down the lauch of the game. If I stop KIS the game will lauch must faster, or more practical, configure it so that PON is not scanned. Do you have Kaspersky?

"It do not change anything :-)". But it is not very important anyway.
