Those threads cover the rule but not the specific questions I asked.

Where is it I should look to see what water areas border a particular land area?

Hover your mouse over the regions to see their footprint; do the same for nearby regions. I believe the engine uses these footprints to determine adjacency (and double adjacency).

If Fort Monroe is doubly adjacent to Hampton Roads and the James Estuary, this should be enough for it to control passage between the James and Chesapeake Bay, which is historical. Even today, all shipping from Norfolk, Hampton, and points upriver must pass under Fort Monroe's guns to reach Wasington, Baltimore, or the open ocean.

Also Ol' Choctaw, put the pointer over the (tiny) harbor of a city or fort and it will tell you which areas it is adjacent to - usually only one.

See I was totally in the neighborhood. Anyhow, sounds like you'll have to learn to read data files after all.

Yup, Cro. I'm sure Gray has to be sick answering questions on this issue to all the new members over time. It is one of the "gray" areas of the game. Har, har.

Siege Guns

Fri May 27, 2011 2:31 am

My worthy and honorable opponent in my current PBEM has suggested that siege guns are especially effective vs ships that move in, park, disgorge units, take the position and therefore never get fired at.

This makes some sense to me, as it might occur during the ensuing combat.

Anyone ever tried it as a way to ameliorate the double adjacency business? If so, does it work?

Maybe it is a bit early, before my first cup of coffee but this is unclear to me what you mean.

Are you talking about going against the fort at once? Capturing a port you will usually capture any transports but the warships always escape.

IMHO, I think that both coastal artillery and Rodman artillery are better against ships. Use siege guns for fortifications, better. Although I'm not in favor of using this type of artillery, because they slow down your movements. ;)

Thanks, guys. I think what my opponent meant (it's a translation issue) is that siege guns will fire on invading ships that are bombarding in support of a force coming off those ships. The bombardment, he seems to say, will target the ships, not just the troops.

I have no experience seeing this in action, and am wondering if it's trueb(or perhaps I misunderstood him). Same goes for Rodmans, Columbiads and the other "big guns" I guess.

I have not run across it in the game as yet.

If I see it I will let you know. There are a few forts that have mortars in them though.
