Sedgwick is fortifying the Ohio and Mississippi confluent (Paducah and Columbus), along with the existing Forts Donelson and Island 10, that area is deadly to Union fleets. I’ve got fort construction units en route to Cairo and I may fortify Cincinnati as well. I might just out-fort Sedgwick on the Ohio and go ahead and build forts at Evansville and New Albany and Ironton and Charleston and Wheeling and Pittsburgh. At least it would cut down on raiders…

McClellan Army at Manassas / Culpeper and Butler Army at James City will rest and reinforce this turn for a stronger attack next turn.

Grant’s attack weakened Holmes at losses of 1.5 to 1, plus gained Grant a promotion – to me, that’s not a defeat. I should be able to rest and reinforce faster than Holmes, so if he remains at Charlottesville I’ll get another shot at him by Early November.

Whipple Corps should be rested (if it ever reaches James City) and ready for an attack by Early November at the latest.

King showed up at Hard KY then got chased to New Albany – I had him running to Rome IN but joining Fremont is better.

Two Atlantic Blockade fleets (each with 3 blockade fleets, 1 frigate squadron, 1 scouting squadron, and 2 transports) are working: one on station and one in port. The Gulf Squadron is deployed now (home port Fort Pickens) and will be fully operational (2 full fleets like the ATL SQ) after the next buying spree (4 turns).

Butler Army is holding down CSA Forney Corps (with about equal strength).

Grant and Meade advance to Culpeper VA for jump off (to be joined by more divisions). McDowell is at Stafford for jump off (to be joined by more divisions). Fredericksburg is the target. McClellan Army plans to destroy as much of Lee Army as he can, while driving on Richmond. Note that each of the divisions assigned to Grant and Meade are fully manned and optimized as much as possible. McDowell is almost as capable. Each Corps has amphibious capability and Arty and Supply.

In the Midwest, Fremont requested forts at Evansville (plus depot), Cincinnati, and Ironton (plus depot) to disrupt CSA raiders and fleets. Fremont Army is strengthening and positioning itself to take advantage of any openings.

Out West, Banks Army commands Cairo and St Louis and is building up forces.

McClellan is tempted to attack Holmes and attempt to destroy that force, but Fredericksburg is key to an advance on Richmond (and Longstreet is weaker).

The Union plans to roll out forts upriver on the Ohio – trapping the CSA fleet.

Wallace attack at Williamsburg reminded the CSA of the threat from the Peninsula.

CSA Jackson left the Kentucky theater to reinforce Virginia. USA Fremont has been looking for this opportunity and will attack Louisville from the east (supported by Cincinnati). Keyes is at Lexington and Thomas is en route to Boone KY. If things go just right, the CSA fleet will sortie just before I build a fort at Evansville (trapping the fleet upriver).

1862 PLAN REVIEW

Optimize Army of the Potomac with two maneuver Corps. Optimize Army of the James. Optimize Army of the Ohio with two maneuver Corps. Build Western Army. Mission Accomplished. The AOTP has two maneuver Corps (Hooker and Meade) with McDowell Corps for support, plus Halleck Corps at WDC.

Secure Potomac River Line: garrison Leonardtown MD and Port Tobacco MD; take Winchester VA; raise loyalty along B&O railway. Advance and develop Rappahannock River Line: take and garrison Fredericksburg VA. Prepare for advance to the James River line. Mission Accomplished. The bar was set pretty low –the CSA did get a raider into Pennsylvania to disrupt rail – but no real threats.

Ohio River line: take and garrison Louisville KY and build depot and fort. Build depot and garrison Ironton OH. Take and garrison Clarksburg KY and Lexington KY. Prepare for advance to the Cumberland River line. Mission Failed. Louisville is defended by a strong CSA Army with two Corps. The CSA fort at Paducah disrupted Union naval operations. The Union is building forts at Evansville and Cincinnati to disrupt the CSA naval operations. Union land forces are less than equal to CSA forces. The Union liberated Lexington KY and Clarksburg KY. Mission Failed even worse than when I wrote this…. The CSA took Cincinnati before the fort was complete.

Mississippi River Line: build fort and garrison at Cairo IL; build fort and garrison at St Louis MO. Advance and develop Missouri River line: take and garrison and build depot at Bloomington MO; raise loyalty along MO railway. Mission Accomplished. Forts are operational and strongly garrisoned at Cairo and St Louis. Require depot and garrison at Bloomington MO.

Take and garrison and build fort at Richmond VA. Mission Failed. Union forces are advancing - McClellan and Butler believe that Richmond will fall by the end of Summer.

Execute Operation Whisky XX. Mission Failed. The forces allocated to this Operation are fortunate to be alive.

Conduct coastal raid, VA raid, and KY raid. Unsatisfactory. The Operation Whisky XX coastal raid didn’t destroy the Wilmington Depot (but now I know that commanders must be activated to destroy a depot) and even worse, the CSA division that responded to the raid ended up reinforcing the CSA defense of Virginia.

Plan and execute secret Operation if conditions permit (I have an idea for one). Overcome by events.

The Naval plan is to maintain the Atlantic Blockade; maintain force at Ohio and Mississippi River confluent; maintain force at Hampton Roads; blockade Richmond VA; develop transport capability. Unsatisfactory. The Atlantic Blockade is operational; the Gulf Blockade is nearly operational. Rotating fleets will ensure that a fleet is always on station. The loss of an ironclad fleet to CSA Fort Paducah changed the operating environment for Union river fleets – until land forces clear the forts, river fleets are docked. Dahlgren maintains a strong monitor / blockade fleet at Hampton Roads, with occasional port calls for rest and refit. Richmond is not under blockade. The Union has enough transport capability for coastal operations. The loss of the river fleet accounts for the unsatisfactory assessment – the bluewater navy is satisfactory.

Quartermaster Plan: build depots at Jersey City, Buffalo, Boston, and Fort Laramie. Maintain rail / river / ocean supply at average to full. Ensure that key garrisons have Supply Wagons to minimize risk of capture. Mission Accomplished. Depots are garrisoned. Require Jersey City and Buffalo depots. Rail and River supply are usually at excess but never below average. Ocean supply is available except when fleet is in port. Supply wagons are at key garrisons.

The Economic plan is to industrialize front-line states for General Supply and Ammunition. Mission accomplished. The Union has more GS, Ammo, and WS than it can use.

Overall, the Union is making slow progress in the East, small progress in Kentucky, and stable in the West. McClellan and Butler are hammering at CSA forces in Virginia and have better locations to rest and replace than the CSA. Additional divisions are being deployed to the theater. The Ohio line is being heavily fortified and the CSA will have increasing difficulty keeping Louisville supplied. The forts may also inhibit raiders from disrupting rail. Union forces are being reinforced to resume the offensive. The West is stable except for raiders.

The Bluewater Navy is ahead of schedule for deploying blockade squadrons.

CSA Johnston surprised me somewhat with the attack on Cincinnati (since I’m outnumbered in the Kentucky theater I’ve been expecting an attack – but not at Cincinnati). I don’t think the CSA can keep Cincinnati, nor do I think the CSA wants to keep it. The CSA now has to get the Army out…

USA Fremont plans to take Louisville and concentrate the Army, however, even then CSA Polk Corps can probably kick Fremont out.

Grant Army reserve to Kentucky.

Great stuff so far, I'm just embarking on my first full campaign as the Union against the AI and your report is giving me important clues as to what's attainable and what isn't and how you're supposed to pace yourself in the recruitment. This game is slighty terrifying but pretty thrilling. I've also sent my cavalry under Schulz to defend Harper's Ferry, but seeing a menacing Confederate force approach from the South I might try and dodge them instead of defending the place and see if I can get up to some mischief with their supplies instead.

Instead of reducing the size you should use JPEG compression.

I use FastStone Capture. You should be able to find it here for free.

You can edit captured image with text, arrows and boxes and save the result taking benefit of the option to compress image in order to avoid too heavy files.
