Well, finally, here it is:

The iPad show is on, watch Steve Jobs unleash the reality-distortion field
Jan. 28, 2010 (8:34 am) By: Christian Zibreg

iPad (homescreen, front right angle)Apple has posted a video stream of the Wednesday’s iPad media event. A must-see presentation features El Jobso cozying up on a couch on the Yerba Buena stage and surfing the web on his iPad.

Whenever Steve Jobs delivers one of his trademark keynotes, Apple fans and haters alike are glued to their screens, analyzing his every move and inspecting frames for hidden clues. Regardless of the camp you belong to, watching Jobs do his magic is an out-of-this-world experience unlike any other dull corporate presentation.

The ultimate showman and salesman, Jobs appeared on the stage of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco Wednesday morning, dressed in his trademark black shirt, blue jeans, and sneakers. His mission was simple: sell the world Apple’s new tablet.

This is one of Jobs’ better keynotes worth sitting through an hour and a half. You know the drill – the welcome applauding, a few business metrics to get you in the mood, pooh-poohing tablets in general before cutting through iPad features back and forth, everything spiced up with memorable one-liners.

Although the presentation lacks a traditional “one more thing” segment when bombs are usually dropped, it features something worth seeing: Steve Jobs in a laid-back mood, cozying up on a couch and surfing the web on his iPad, completely ignoring the fact that the world is watching.

As always, the company is advertising on-demand footage on the main Apple.com homepage, inviting users to watch its superstar CEO with the usual punch line:

Resistance is futile – don’t deny wanting to watch the keynote. Ready to be drawn in by Jobs’ reality-distortion field? Point your browser at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/specialevent0110/ and enjoy the show (direct links to the streams: Low Quality, Medium Quality, High Quality). Apple’s free multimedia software QuickTime is required to watch the stream the event.

You can download QuickTime for Windows or Mac OS X here. If you hate QuickTime for Windows (who doesn’t), you can always google for QuickTime alternatives that replicate just the plug-in functionality without grinding your computer to a halt.

Really, I find this "device" useless...
What's the point of it??... I may be missing something... :bonk:
It looks like a big Iphone without most of it features...

... and some problems for the "iPad" (or that will not be the name?)

IPad? That's So 2002, Fujitsu Says
By HIROKO TABUCHI, Published: January 28, 2010

TOKYO — It’s sleek. It’s mobile. It has a touchscreen.
It’s Fujitsu’s iPad from 2002.

Sold mainly in the United States, the multifunctional device from the Tokyo technology company helps shop clerks verify prices, check real-time inventory data and close sales on the go.

Fujitsu, which applied for an iPad trademark in 2003, is claiming first dibs, setting up a fight with Apple over the name of the new tablet device that Apple plans to sell starting in March.

“It’s our understanding that the name is ours,” Masahiro Yamane, director of Fujitsu’s public relations division, said Thursday. He said Fujitsu was aware of Apple’s plans to sell the iPad tablet and that the company was consulting lawyers over next steps.

Fujitsu’s iPad, which runs on Microsoft’s CE.NET operating system, has a 3.5-inch color touchscreen, an Intel processor and Wi-fi and Bluetooth connections; it also supports VoIP telephone calls over the Internet, a technology also used by Skype.

“Mobile is a keyword for Fujitsu’s iPad, too,” Mr. Yamane said. “With the iPad, workers don’t have to keep running back to a computer. They have everything right at their fingertips.”

Apple may have an edge on pricing, however: the iPads from Fujitsu can sell for more than $2,000, compared with $499 for an entry-model iPad from Apple.

Fujitsu’s application to trademark the iPad name stalled because of an earlier filing by Mag-Tech, an information technology security company based Seal Beach, California, for a handheld number-encrypting device.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office listed Fujitsu’s application as abandoned in early 2009, but the company revived its application in June.

The following month, Apple used a proxy to apply for an international trademark for the iPad. It has since filed a string of requests with the U.S. Patent Office for more time to oppose Fujitsu’s application. Apple has until Feb. 28 to say whether it will oppose Fujitsu’s claims to the iPad name.

While the dispute between Fujitsu and Apple centers on the United States, there are other iPads around the world. The German conglomerate Siemens uses the name for engines and motors, while a Canadian lingerie company, Coconut Grove Pads, has the right to market iPad padded bras.

Apple faced a similar spat three years ago with Cisco Systems over the iPhone name. The two companies eventually negotiated a settlement.

I supose they will reach an agreement in the end...

Everybody's shitting on the Ipad just because it is not what they wanted it to be.
They are all like a kid who hasn't got the toy he wanted for Xmas...
Ipad is what it is. A casual and fun device which allows us to watch movies, TV with a better resolution than an Iphone or and Ipod or any other device from another brand, Archos for exemple.
You can also listen to the music while you are editing texts, doing any dynamic documents with Keynote. It will have all the Iwork applications. You have Iphoto so you could edit your photos. You can read Ebooks, dowload them, buy them online. You can surf on the internet in a nice resolution, check your emails...
It could run every apllications which already exist on the App store. Many of these applications are part of the Iphone success. they really bring the Iphone as the device we all know today. I think the Ipad will have spectacular aplications which will help a lot of people for their work.
Yes, it is not multitask, is it really important ? yes it seems not to sensitive to pressure under the finger. These feature would have been a revolution for many graphic artists but many companies tried to have this but the best that they reached is 512 levels of pressure which is far less than all the best graphic tablets on the market...

I think it is a great device and I will probably buy one when it become available. It will be a great tool between my Iphone and my computer...

Don't forget your special USB-Apple Cable because Ipad has not USB or SD Card connector :neener:

You can read Ebooks, dowload them, buy them online.
1024*768 resolution, glossy screen, i have some doubts to read a roman with this sort of screen.

The good side of the story is that Apple open the market

There are other devices that do the same and/or even more already... and some are even quite old (+2/3 years)
If what they are trying to sell is just a "big iPhone", then I do not see the need to buy a new device... really... ;)

By the way, I do not think it is a good idea to read eBooks on that device... your eyes will not be happy with that... :neener: :D

Nowadays, many people put their files on ftp servers, check their mails online, etc.
No really need to have such connectors on this device. But you are rigth, the adaptator exists and will help to connect other device to it...

Lafrite wrote:1024*768 resolution, glossy screen, i have some doubts to read a roman with this sort of screen.

I think most of the people who will buy it will use it to watch videos, surf internet, check mail, do some txt editing.
You are right, read an Ebook in a garden... Forget about it !

But to watch videos, this is enough. When you encode videos for Iphone or other device it is really rare to have huge resolutions. Playing HD videos on a notebook, this is a joke. Ntsc or Pal large screen is enough --> 720X480...

Generalisimo wrote:There are other devices that do the same and/or even more already... and some are even quite old (+2/3 years)

Amazon Kindle to read book. it is supposed to play music too. But it is B and W...

Archos plays videos and do many other feature but it is ugly and the "OS" is not really friendly...

Samsung created one 5 years ago but it didn't work...

I already have an Iphone but come, surfing the internet, checking mails, playing games or working on graphics applications like Brushes or SketchbookXpress... It's fun but the screen is too small...

Generalisimo wrote:By the way, I do not think it is a good idea to read eBooks on that device... your eyes will not be happy with that... :neener: :D

right !

To me, it will be a nice device. I already have an Iphone and a computer.
This will allows me when I travel to work a bit on sketches, do some research on the internet, check my mails, do some text editing while I listen to music and when I'm tired, watch a movie...
It is not a computer, not a phone but just fill the hole inbetween and I think it will be useful to many people. to me, it will be.

Some people yells because it is too expensive... it is not, as an Apple product.

An Ipod touch is 200€ for a 8 gbits, 289€/32Gbits, 379€/64 gbits...

Ipad is 300€/16 gb, 460€/32Gb and 520€/64 gb...

Macbook first price is 899€...

fills the hole...

It's called a netbook. :neener:

(i.e., the device between a computer and a phone).

If I needed such a device, I'd probably wait for an Android tablet to come out, seeing as how it will almost certainly be cheaper, have better hardware, and not have monopolistic restrictions (e.g., lack of Flash) imposed by Apple. But then again, I'm the type who prefers to buy a Creative mp3 player rather than pay double the price for a lower-specced iPod mini. ;)

Won't try to predict whether the iPad will be a success though. Time will tell.

Maybe, it is your preference. But to me and many people, even if Apple have restrictions in their products and even if it is more expensive, they iare the most simple devices of the market. they are very easy to use. they are better made, better designed and handier.
You are right, Android based products are clever but much complicated to simple users...

About Flash, yes, it is bad not to have this simple plugin that many sites use. But Even if flash is a really cool tool to display great animations and content for the internet, it is a mess ! You can't control the content of what is in a flash file, sequence...
Apple don't want their mobile phone and of course Ipad to be able to display flash, probably because they can't control the content of these websites...
We all now that Apple love to control, look at the app store, no sex application in it, no racist game, etc...

Well, I think if this device is like it is, they really have thought about it and you can trust me they have good reasons ! ;)

Ding ding ding....key phrase here, "as an Apple product". I suppose when everything you make comes out costing twice what it's worth, the relative amount seems lower. The only advantage Apple holds in this respect is that it's easy to use. Apple junkies and people who aren't willing or able to learn to use something better will use this, and Apple knows it's target audience and knows they'll pay a premium for simplicity.

They also restrict development on it, which in theory is nice, since it allows people to program from a set design rather than dealing with mods which is the bane of the Android 3rd party devs at the moment. So you'd think that most of the apps that come out for these would pretty much work, but as an owner of the an Ipod touch, I would say that a good 20% of the apps are completely broken, and another 30% are barely usable. ITunes has become a big steaming pile of crap over the past few years...the more you try and get out of these things, the less use they are.
