as an aside to the earlier comments about china and the boxer rebellion, i recently visited canaerfon castle in wales, a truly amazing castle and well worth a visit if you are in the uk, which houses the museum of the 23rd regt of foot the welsh fusiliers who fought at peking and who bought home many boxer weapons of which several are on display as well as original boxer flags and drums and very fearsome they look as well
It didn't strike me at first but now I remember I
have seen that display. I mean, obviously I remember going to Canaerfon castle, but I forget about the Welch Fusiliers and their display. One of the things that amused me there was the reference made to them as a modern unit, specifically regarding how speaking in Welsh was an unbeatable form of encryption. I mean, I imagine most people intercepting communications can probably speak English, or be able to pass it along (it's the international language after all) - but who on earth, on the other side, would be able to understand Welsh
EDIT: My dad just told me that this is fairly standard practice since the US Army pioneered it in WW2 with Navajo and Apache - but it's still an ingenious and amusing idea
