Thank you.
First test: The game is now more stable and AI has not locked yet.

freezes at siege delayed

Wed Nov 12, 2008 2:54 pm

Disabling sounds helps the game start immediately instead of after 2-3 minute delay.

However, every time I get hung up during the first turn battle resolution. Battles work fine; however the siege doesnt. I say siege because I have never gotten past the first siege. It does the siege then goes to siege delayed and freezes. nothing ever shows up on the screen that allows me to click to continue the turn. Doesnt matter what siege, sometimes Antwerp sometimes Liege.

I have 2.53 ghz processor dual core 4 GB memory vista business

and I am austria in the 4 person game single player

The 4-players campaign is only for 4 human players in MultiPlayer. That's why the sieges hang. I'm going anyway to fix this nasty bug, of course.

We mentioned it that the 4 player GC was meant for multiplayer, and so you may encounter single player bugs we missed. While we iron those out, you should play the 2 player GC. Some players reported it solved a lot of their problem.
Its more fun, anyway. :P

Disabling sounds makes the game does not load the musics and sounds into RAM. This is why you save time, and RAM.

1918 Scenario-

Good news: Play develops longer.

Bad news: game still freezes after a time, usually in military phase.
Very long times while AI is thinking.

Also, the game crashed here:

Image

Correct me, but, is this Germany fighting an air battle against Germany?

The game is still very slow and the pointer hand drags slowly. There is a lot of hard disk crunching and very very slow unloading/loading screen-to-desktop and Ctrl +Alt +Del which suggests memory problems, yet, I do have 2GB RAM and 256 MB Graphics card memory.

Did someone post that their virtual memory was being used too much even though they have 4GB RAM? Sounds like a leak?

I have seen this kind of thing before, back when Civilization 4 was released and there were bad memory leaks resulting in slow unresponsive game and crashes. This was due to combination of a memory leak and low RAM, but here I have enough RAM and a mid-spec PC.

I hope this helps, altough I cannot spend too much time further testing today...

I know the engine is different, but there should exist an option in WW1 to reduce memory usage and to avoid loading the biggest map textures, as was done in the AACW engine. After all, it did solve MANY memory and graphics problems, until the engine got more stable. It could have been copied, after all this is all AGEOD, isn't it ? ;)

No, this is not AGE engine... hence the discrepancies ;)

This one is fixed with 1.0.4. I keep working like a madman. Please forgive me...

With the last fix you sent me, I had chance to play more battles.

The time the AI takes to commit forces on the battle screen is too long.

The game played slow with jerky mouse movements and then crashed after I saved the game:

Image

Memory leak?

Also: drive e:\progetti

I do not have this directory (it looks Italian!). It is trying to allocate memory to a non-existant location on my PC.
My e: drive is actually my DVD drive location.

So if I guess -this referring to a 'drive e:\progetti' location referance that is somehow coded into the game by mistake? And could this be causing problems?

Also, put the "Security Level" to 3 and try again...

It better be out by tomorrow 10am GMT+1, so I can give it some thorough testing after breakfast :sherlock:

So far no freezes for me, full download yesterday, AMD X2, 2GB RAM, nvidia GF7900GS with 512MB VRAM, but I just played the first two tutorials and gave the Tannenberg scenario a few tries.
Only encountered a crash once, at the end of a battle.

PS: Just kidding regarding the patch release, take whatever time it needs to properly analyze and solve the problems. :hat:

No Freezes ever for me. No long waits either. But I do get some CTDs and I get an error every time I exit the game.

The test fix works a lot better now.
Battles are faster resolved and there is better stability.

I love to hear such words!

I refactored the game engine of WW1 migrating 99% of the data operations to a unique thread. This shoud be a warning for Pocus: never do a multi-threaded AGE engine! Unless you beta-test it with a team composed by hundred of guys for months and months! :mdr:

It's all about permutations and combinations:

Example:
At least 3 operating systems [XP, Vista, Mac]
At least 10 Graphics boards/drivers [probably more like 100]
At least 4 memory configs [1MB, 2MB, 3MB, 4MB]
A bunch of CPU configs [multi core, single core, Intel, whatzis, whozis, etc]
Varying Hard drives, defrag status, free space, speed....

And on top of it all, the GIFOTKB variable.

Someone else can do the math. I'm stunned that it works for so many possible combinations.

..and other than Microsoft, IBM, Apple, etc, who can affort enough testers and platforms to hit and test all these combinations?

...it's a bit like the Space Shuttle: the question was never IF it would blow up, but rather 'when, and what cause?'

That's my story and I'm sticking to it....

P.s. The version of patch I'm testing is looking pretty good.. :D
Always ask yourself: "Am I part of the Solution?" If you aren't, then you are part of the Problem!

Calvinus, WW1_v2 does not work for me.

The previous fix you sent did:
I played through Caporetto and WW1_v1 worked perfectly.

With WW1_v2, game freezes on first battle screen and I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del to escape the game.

You really should consider releasing a beta patch as Pocus does, on the forums. I believe you might get bad surprises if you are just testing in-house, and with a couple of the various players that have had CTD... (I also had at least one, BTW).

I have the vol. 2 patch from Calvinus, which I am trying to test, but I can't apply it. Can you tell me how to.
