When was this released? Any chance of finding it at Borders or B&N?

Crimeguy, book was released June 2007.Bought mine online at Amazon.ca in Canada, but I just checked Amazon.com in U.S and it is available for $26.37.Delivery usually takes about 2 days, five customer reviews so far and they all gave it 5 out of 5.I've been touring civil war battlefields for 27 years ,and these are the best maps I've ever seen.Highly recommended.

Looks good, my interests have been in other arenas lately though. Any recommendations for a collection of maps for the other battles? I have the "Official Atlas of the Civil War" republished by Barnes and Noble Press (a steal at $19.95), but am looking for something that's a little more legible (the maps are very hard to read, and rarely show the directions of battle, but just the dispositions at particular points in time).

Going to battlefields is a rarity in my household - hopefully when my son is a little older he'll be into it. My wife would only do it if there was an outlet store nearby :p leure:

I would like to have a set of maps handy when I'm reading on the subject. I finally got around to buying Shelby Foote's series, and the maps he drew are terrible. The aforementioned atlas is pretty good.

Sorry Crimeguy I thought you wanted them for touring. For something to go along with Foote's great work I would recommend THE ATLAS OF THE CIVIL WAR by James M.McPherson.It came out in 1994 but I think its still available.

It really stirs the soul to see the battlefields. I've been to Gettysburg and it just takes your breath away when you think about what happened there.

I live pretty close to Bentonville and I have visited Fort Macon and Fort Fisher. My wife is somewhat interested, while my teenage daughter would rather be visiting the outlet mall.

I've been to Gettysburg a couple times (I'm from Philly). Also been to Valley Forge (not that exciting IMHO). I've also been to Normandy. The cemetary was pretty chilling.

Normandy would be incredible to visit. I've seen the cemetary on television but I'm sure it doesn't do it justice.

Maps of Gettysburg, a Note from the Publisher

Thu Jul 12, 2007 3:20 pm

Hi All

Someone just alerted me to this discussion. I am glad to read of the interest in this book. I had not heard of this forum before, but it looks great, and I can't wait to dig around more later this evening.

Here is a post I placed on the Gettysburg Discussion Group a couple days ago. Some of you might find it helpful.

Online Ordering: The book is widely available, so I do not know what Amazon is talking about when they say it won't ship for weeks. Unfortunately, Amazon went to the Big Dance with books, but left with appliances and make-up; i.e., failed to keep their book division well staffed. It is nearly impossible to get information changed on their site (it is often wrong, for many books), or get a correct answer to a simple question.

Signed and Inscribed FIRST EDITIONS: Yes, we have signed copies at http://www.savasbeatie.com. Brad was good enough to agree to sign a few cases, but they were gone in a few days. He is out of books (again), but we have ordered up more from the warehouse in DC to his home in Maryland, so orders should all be in the mail by the end of this coming week (July 13). Yes, when you order a book from us it will automatically be signed, and if you want to confirm or would like it specially inscribed, send us a follow up email through our website at sales@savasbeatie.com. We posted a recent interview with Brad there that will also answer some of the questions I am being asked.

First Editions: As I write [July 7th], about 65% of the first edition is already gone-either sold outright or in the stream of commerce. Many ask how to make sure they have a first edition, first printing. The only books out there now are first editions, first printings.

However, this week we are ordering up a second printing, which will be available in three weeks. So, you can decide on the speed with which you should act-or not.

Like all books, I am sure there will be something in Gottfried's "Maps of Gettysburg" we wish we had done differently, or written differently or presented differently. It is the nature of any beast such as this, but the initial reviewing world seems to really like this book, and for that we are thankful. Unlike most publishishing houses, we publish only what we want to, and we realized early on that this project will be helpful to many people.

Our sincere hope is that what we have done contributes to the study of the campaign, and that it triggers additional excitement in others whose interest in the Civil War is currently but lukewarm-that would be wonderful. An entry point into seeing and understanding might well do that, and we think MOG does that well.

I got a phone call yesterday [July 6] from a man who bought a copy at the battlefield. He had never visited the field or read about the Civil War, but his 17-year old son wanted to go. So they drove 700 miles to see the field. He said they read Brad's book in the hotel, took it on the field, and both of them "really got into the battle." Now the dad wants to read more about it, and asked for reading suggestions. That put a huge smile on my face. Another convert infected with the virus.

Finally, let take the time to say thank you for all you do on this board. It is amazing to see the knowledge bantered so easily about here. What you have done for Gettysburg and campaign is extraordinary. I wish I could play a bigger role, but my weak knowledge base would instantly be visible for all to see. So I will stick with publishing and reading and leave the discussion to the experts. Happy reading. Best regards.
