The real "siege" of Ft. Sumter

Sat Apr 21, 2007 11:12 am

Maj. Anderson(USA), his shot and powder almost completely expended, accepted surrender terms roughly 34 hours after the first shot was fired. His entire command( minus the batteries of course )was allowed to evacuate to Union ships waiting just outside the range of the harbor defenses. The only fatality of the entire episode occured when a cannon exploded during the firing of a salute honoring the defense of the fort, killing on of his gunners(Anderson had requested to be allowed to fire the salute as part of his terms). :p apy:

So in game terms the Confederates should be able to just walk into a fort with an intact battery sometime during the first turn, freeing up the Carolina Command to travel by rail to Manassas and destiny! :king:

Just wondering why this event was excluded/changed. Was it play balance, tester suggestion, allowing for alternate history, etc?

Many thanks :)

we thought it could be fun, a game is not a book, so why not giving some degree of freedom there? Fort Sumter had several relief attempt before its fall.

But minor relief attempts that almost got blown out of the water by the surrounding CSA Art. bateries. That's why Sumter fell, food and ammo were running low and the garrison was very, very, small, plus the CSA Arty. was pounding the fort fairly well and would have pounded any ships approaching the fort. This was the case with most of the USA controlled forts that fell to the CSA forces at the start of the war, so, Sumter fell quickly.

If the USA ia able to hold Sumter, then Charleston's main outlet and entrance to the sea is partially and effectively blockaded from the start, and that didn't happen.
