But minor relief attempts that almost got blown out of the water by the surrounding CSA Art. bateries. That's why Sumter fell, food and ammo were running low and the garrison was very, very, small, plus the CSA Arty. was pounding the fort fairly well and would have pounded any ships approaching the fort. This was the case with most of the USA controlled forts that fell to the CSA forces at the start of the war, so, Sumter fell quickly.
If the USA ia able to hold Sumter, then Charleston's main outlet and entrance to the sea is partially and effectively blockaded from the start, and that didn't happen.
