Save just vanished...

Sun Feb 10, 2013 5:39 pm

Well I started to play France and progressed well into the early 1870's. However, at one point, the game just froze and then I ended it through the task manager. When I restarted the game, I could not load it since it had had disappeared. Is there any way in which I can somehow get the save back? BTW the save file is still visible and accessible in the programme.

Glad if anyone can help!

In my France GC the game just failed to write the .HST file for the turn (or rather, wrote a zero-byte file) - there was a brief error message during processing but otherwise I didn't figure out what had happened until I pressed the next turn button, at which point it went to the game menu screen (and of course, as the telephone button is up there on the screen, I had to repeat this a few times to be sure I hadn't just pressed the wrong button). I take it that the thing to do is just to replace the TRN and HST files with the ones from the previous turn in backup1? I am assuming that it was a filesystem issue rather than a game one, in the first instance.

Basically those files for your last turn are in [game directory]\VGN\Saves\[name of game] and the backup files are in subdirectories from there. Game directory for a steam install is by default c:\program files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\xommon\pride of nations\ but I imagine that it's the same structure below that for other install methods.

Yep tried it but unfortunately, the 'saved' game does not appear in the 'load game' section. Normally, when it freezes and sends me to the main menu, I just end the game, restart it, and then find the saved game, go back one turn and then it works normally. Unfortunately, this time round there is no saved game in the main menu, although when I go into the game's folder, the saved game is still there. Wierd...

You need to find your files in the backup folder, and copy them over to the save folder (up one level). The computer damaged your .hst or .trn file, and you need to add the last one. Copying your files from the lower backup to the main will allow you to re-run the last turn. You won't see it in the game, you have to do it outside the game interface.

At least you got your game back. Enjoy playing (and you might want to save a copy of your game somewhere else every so often in case this happens again).
