Confederate 4 Star Generals

Mon Aug 11, 2008 7:22 pm

Hello. Has anyone been able to attain a 4 star promotion with the Confederacy in the '61 campaign? Seems like no matter what, I can't get Beauregard, Johnston, Lee, or anyone else promoted beyond 3 star. Is this correct?

There are no 4-star promotions in this game, except 2 cases via event (Grant & Sherman). In all cases, the 4-star is purely cosmetic, in game terms it is a 3-star with a higher seniority :cwboy:

There is a 4-star general that you never get control of on the CSA side, who is available for a very limited amount of time in 1861 -- but he starts that way and isn't promoted to 4-star rank.

Scott is also a 4-star, I think? Same thing for him though; locked in Washington, disappears not long after the war starts, i.e. not much use.

Confederate 4 Star Generals

Tue Aug 12, 2008 1:16 pm

Actually, if you play the Gettysburg and subsequent campaigns, there are actually several Confederate 4 star generals (they start that way). However, this doesn't seem to be a rank you can attain in the 1861 Grand Campaign. In fact, I have a situation where Beauregard, Lee, and J. Johnston are all 3 star generals, with a seniority of 1! I wish this was something that could be changed, say allowing a restricted number of 4 star slots for each side.

yeah your right the CSA general cooper is a 4 star general and outranks all the confederate generals in the game and is locked and rarely gets played, however i did read someone mentioning in one of there games the union stared there ofencive actions early in 1861 and had quite a formidable force and was threatening richmond by late 1861 and samuel cooper magically became unlocked and playable!

however i read up on why in the game he isnt playable and as i read he had much devided loyalties as he and i qoute was "close friends with Jefferson Davis" and "also became the brother-in-law of future Confederate diplomat James M. Mason and later the father-in-law of Union General Frank Wheaton. his wifes sister, Ann Maria Mason, was the mother of Confederate cavalry general Fitzhugh Lee, the nephew of Robert E. Lee." so you can see he was much split to fight for either cuase to protect his family.

he is removed from play in the game as he resigns himself for probably personal reasons to a more political and administrative role in the armed forces.

I think Sam Cooper is there to provide some historical flavor :cwboy:

heres a short bio I found online of Samuel cooper..

Birth: Jun. 12, 1798
Death: Dec. 3, 1876

Civil War Confederate General. In 1815, he graduated from the US Military Academy and was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Army Light Artillery. He served in artillery units until 1837, when he was appointed chief clerk of the US War Department. In 1842, he served in the Seminole War, was promoted Colonel, saw action in the Mexican-American War and was appointed Adjutant General in 1852. At the outbreak of the Civil War, his loyalties were with the South and he resigned his commission in March 1861. He was immediately given a commission as Brigadier General, Adjutant and Inspector General of the Confederate Army, a post he held the entire war. In 1862, he was promoted to full general, the highest ranking officer in the Confederate Army and reported directly to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Cooper's last official act was to preserve the official records of the Confederate Army and turn them over to the United States Government at the war's end. After the war, he returned to his plantation in Virginia and was farmer until his death. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)

i'd like to be able to promote my own "general of all armies," thank you very much, just like 'ol jeff davis or abe did! though maybe not a "4-star" per se, certainly there were "official overall commanders" -- grant in '64 and lee in '65-- they seemed to think they needed them during the actual war and i agree w/ them for our purposes, as well. :D

I like the way they did it in the game. I wouldn't change it.

Yes, but...

Regardless of whether you think it's a good idea or not (I personally would like the flexibility to do so, but understand others may not), the fact remains there are Confederate 4 Star Generals in the Game. Check out the Gettysburg and forward campaigns - Lee and Beauregard are both 4 Star Generals (might be one or two others). So the game recognizes this from a historical standpoint, but it doesn't allow YOU to promote them. Start in the '61 campaign and you can't get Lee promoted beyond 3 Star rank. Why make it impossible to promote him to the rank the game itself recognizes in several of it's other scenarios?

And no, I'm not refering to Scott or Cooper. I know, they're locked and disappear relatively early. But I wouldn't use them even if they were active as they have pretty bad stats.

On January 31, 1865, Lee was promoted to general-in-chief of Confederate forces; wouldn't we need Lee's promotion represented then?

cool, GL -- i didn't realize it was a 'time constraint' issue. my thinking: since we're supposed to be leading our respective nations during wartime, i want the prerogative to make Lee or Grant (or maybe anybody w/ the rank/seniority) 'top dog' if i want to.

Yeah, I wasn't planning on saying anything yet, but the plan is to make a mod that lets every general in the game be promotable all the way up to at least 3 star level. I'm not sure if I'll go all the way to 4 star since that will pretty much double the work I'll have to do. And besides, once you hit 3 stars, you have all the power you ever will, 4 stars is basically just eye candy and seniority issues.

Some things are still being worked out, but I'm getting started putting things together now, so we'll see how it goes.

What I don't understand is--there is no function in the game for a General of the Armies. The army command is really the highest command level in the game, and a three-star suffices for that level. What would be the purpose (in game terms) of a four-star Lee or Grant? :innocent:

About the reserved .mdl files

Werent those lines put in so AGEOD could use them with any new files introduced via official patches eg. the new generals from the Kentucky scenario.

Modders were to add any after the last reserved file to avoid any clashes in aliases.
