Victory Conditions - Need Clarification

Fri Aug 01, 2008 1:56 am

I just earned a stalemate in the 1776 Carolina Scenario as the British.

At game end I held both objective cities: Charleston and Wilmington. I also held four of the Strategic Towns (Charlotte, Charleston, Savannah, and Augusta) even though according to the victory conditions I only needed two. But I only amassed 26 points to the colonial total of 32.

The explanation at the bottom of the results screen states: The highest victory point count wins at scenario end if neither side achieves all objectives.

I think I fulfilled the objectives requirement. Why a stalemate? Where have I erred in my thinking?

Thanks in advance for clearing this up for me. Great game and great customer service as well!

This is what in game terms is a 'Phyrric Victory': you met objectives at too high a cost.

AFAIK, the game engine 'downgrades' a victory one level if you win on objectives and lose on VP.

All we need to do, is find the right way to word this that will fit the graphic formats :)

Suggestions are very welcome! :king:

If I recall correctly (I have played this scenario several times in an attempt at victory as Brits...) To get a total victory, you need ALL objective cities and strategic cities by scenario's end. You had all the objectives, and 4 of the 6 strategic cities. When it told you that you needed 2 strategic cities, it meant you needed the other 2 (Ninety Six and ?Camden?) Anyways, when you don't possess all those objectives and strategic cities, then it determines winner by VP's, which is hard for the Brits to achieve in that scenario.

Actually, two means two. ;)
You need all objectives and any two Strategic Cities, :)

The wording and Victory Result have been worked on by the beta team, and obviously we still don't have clear wording :o

As I understand it:
  • If neither side meets the stated Objectives/Strategic Cities: Higher VP wins [I think there is a 'Stalemate' possible if VP are very close]
  • If you Capture stated requirements [All Obectives, any 2 listed Strategic Cities] with higher VP, you win
    {Not bragging, but I've done this as GBR, with just 3 of the Straregic Cities :sourcil: }
  • If you Capture stated requirements [All Obectives, any 2 listed Strategic Cities] with lower VP, you stalemate [Phyrric Victory]

So, we need some nice, concise way to say all of this in the game screens...

Aha!! I thought VP's were only worth something in the event that a total victory wasn't achieved.

I feel a little dumb, as many times as I played that scenario and not realizing that only 2 of the strategic cities were needed.... that will influence my strategy quite a bit ;-)

Pyrrhicc Victory, Marginal Victory... I think either one of those terms would be more accurate (just my 2 cents....)

Lodilefty,
Siekster,

Thank you for taking the time to thoroughly respond to my question. I understand now.

I've only won this scenario once as the Brits (36 points to 34 points) and to this day I can't remember how I achieved that!

I'm going to accept my stalemate as being fortunate! :)

Thanks again for your time and quick responses.

Bob
