Breaking Ice

Wed Jul 05, 2006 6:44 pm

Hi folks, It's a little upsetting to move an army along the frozen shore of lake
Ontario from Oswego to Gannegaro only to have a thaw and the entire army to find themselves cut off in French territory on the other side of Ontario!

I'm sure an army would never be able to cross such a lake in any case and would only move along the edges. Is there any way to fix this so they can move along lake edges but not cross over or at least keep them on the side they set off from if there is a thaw.

Maybe if the player were to plot from land to lake to land to lake the code will always put his army either back to the land region they just came from or to the land region they were heading to if they had reached the mid point. If the player plots
land to lake to lake to land or similar that his up to him - but he may then end up in an odd position after a thaw.

Cheers, Chris

I would be interested to know what logic is used to decide what region to
put units into when they find themselves on a lake during a thaw?
Maybe at least to a friendly controlled region if possible?

On the subject of frozen lakes I was wondering if ships were still allowed to
bombard when they are trapped by ice? This would seem a little odd.

Cheers, Chris

Sorry Chris, I read your first post and then forgot to answer...

I will see if the test considers the region with the highest military control, this would be logical.
And I will also check that fleet trapped this way can't bombard.

Thanks Pocus, one other thought is that the hide value of units moving along
a lake edge should be pretty poor.

Another possibility would be to record the last land region the unit was on and move back to that if a lake thaws. At present this problem could cost a player the game if a large army is relocated to an enemy controlled area and disintegrates due to lack of supply (as happened to me :) )
