Nice to see you guys hammering this one out- it will be a nice addition to the game when completed. :sourcil:

IMO, if the "results" end up being what most everyone feels is appropriate for the Gap, then I am less concerned about the how and graphic ahistorical appearance. Part of me doesn't like the way the game draws laser straight lines of travel between regions to represent a given move, but hey, I'm a perfectionist anyway! :siffle:

Virginia correction

Hi there... Just a small correction to the railroad in the Shenandoah Valley...

With the railroad running to Strasburg...

Gray_Lensman wrote:Sorry, but my original modification still stands in this case. I went back and reverified my sources "The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War", and maps from this link: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/rrhtml/rrhome.html

I generally do not use information from the Wikipedia, unless it can be verified from outside sources since anyone can log on and make changes to it. Also, I can't view the image from your second link for some reason, maybe file type...

I will be more than happy to make any changes necessary to make the map historically accurate for the 1861 Railroad net, as long as your sources can override the sources I am also using. "The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War" is an official government composite of a great many of the areas that the Civil War was fought over and is my main source of information, with other sources providing verification.

Note that we are trying to reflect the RR grid as it was at the very start of the Civil War (1861) and not adding RRs that were built later, due to the fact that this is a game and the military situation can be substantially different, i.e. neither side would have built RRs in areas that the other side actually controlled. It would have been nice to be able to "build" RRs, but that capability is probably not going to be able to be added to ACW, as it would too much game rework for a game that is already a year old.

Here's copies of the map's I used from the link above:

I stand corrected... The map in my second link (you'll need quicktime picture viewer (or whatever it's name is) must be from before the civil war... (altough the date was supposed to be 1861. And it shows a map similar to the one in the wikipedia article. It has the same style (exactly) as the map library you linked, so I suppose it comes from the same library.

I found another site, detailing the railroads in Virginia at the start of the war: http://www.virginiaplaces.org/classschedule/7civwarrr.html -> showing that your sources are indeed correct.

My apologies...

Well, I feel bad for trying to help your work when it obviously isn't in need of correction... But, this image here might be a jewel for your work, if you haven't seen it allready. It's an image of ALL railroad lines in the Southern States, with the exception of Texas...

http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/map_item.pl?data=/home/www/data/gmd/gmd386/g3860/g3860/cw0012000.sid&style=gmd&itemLink=r?ammem/gmd:@field(NUMBER+@band(g3860+cw0012000))&title=Map%20of%20the%20seat%20of%20war%20with%20the%20lines%20of%20r.%20roads%20leading%20thereto,%20also%20the%20strategical%20points%20as%20laid%20down%20Lith.%20by%20J.%20Manouvrier%20%26%20Co.,%20N.%20Orls.

The image is rather big (~8MB)

and you'll need the SID viewer to view the image in your net-browser: (Internet Explorer or Firefox, with ActiveX enabled)

http://www.lizardtech.com/download/files/win/expressview/maninstall/exview_setup.exe

After installing the program, just open the .SID file in either Internet Explorer or Firefox...

Have Fun :) Hope this will contribute to your GREAT work.

It was so small I originally missed it until another gamer pointed out its value and even the harbor that is currently located there. Next time you reinstall the game to upgrade to the next patch, take some time to examine the v1.00 original map of the rails in Virginia and Kentucky/Tennessee, and you'll see the progress made over the last 8 months in reworking the rails. It has been a rather enlightening experience.

Oh yes, I've noticed the improvements from version 1.00 of the game, believe you me. The work you've done is vast and extraordinary. Truly a work of art (pun intended). Hope the map was helpfull, as it might, being on a single image that is. Keep up the good work Gray, lovin' it :coeurs: :coeurs:

Sounds like a great resource, and I am looking forward to using it.

Each time I use the link, it tells me it is invalid.

Thanks for the tremendous effort!

New to ACW 1861-1865

Tue Jun 24, 2008 9:35 pm

About a month back I purchased this game. Still learning and getting use to it. Not an easy game to learn.

While the forum admistrator was on vacation I joined this forum unable to post or down load. I have a questions about this mod and a request.

1. Which other mods are compatable with the RR Mod? Please list them on the first page and which version.

2. Please edit the posts when you post those new RR links such as
Cincinatti OH - Covington KY are included into this mod.

All the modifications Gray is doing are being included on the official game patches as soon as the patches are realeased.
So only the last modifications posted by Gray (maybe on the last 2 weeks or so?) are not "Official" by now. And on the next game pacth they will be included as well.
You can see the last attachments posted here as a pre release of goodies between official patches. :coeurs:
Any other mod compatible with the last game patch should be compatible with these i think
Don't know what you mean on your number 2 suggestion. :bonk:

Hello GL- good to see you working on the maps again. I have a couple "niggles" to send your way regarding the North Carolina outer banks area. I don't have any issue with the changes or anything like that, just a couple dreaded spelling errors.

1. Ocracoke instead of Ocracock
I found a link about Ocracoke Island here that, I think, explains the whole "Ocracock" vs. "Ocracoke" debate. Seems that the name was changed to Ocracoke well before the Civil War, but some of the locals refer(red) to themselves as "O'cockers" still, hence the confusion.

2. Albemarle instead of Albermale
This one applies to the map (Albemarle Bay) and the tooltip. (It is also the correct spelling for the Virginia county in which Charlottesville resides)
Here is a link to some ACW battle info in NC that may be of some interest to you. NC Battles (note that it looks like all were shallow draft vessels)

Thanks again,
PW

For Gray_Lensman, per transfer from "Patch 1.10d - public release" thread.

The one step I didn't do was "deleting the remaining original game files." Will retry. I'm sure I checked "yes to all" when asked if I wanted to overwrite all old files. Thanks for the help.

Another error. Happened after (1) uninstalling the game, (2) deleting all remaining AACW files, (3) reinstalling, (4) applying patch 1.10d, (5) applying mod 20080704, (6) starting a new game in Apr 61 against CSA AI. Error as recorded in !Main.txt log:

This error happened as I was trying to split a fleet into two parts.

BTW, on my two attempts to play after applying mod 20080704, I do not notice either of the blockade boxes saying anything other than "25%" at any time.

Also, a minutiae: very early in the game, a msg comes up saying that "Major General Banks" is ready for a new command, although his icon shows three stars.

Hello, Lovejoy.
I am currently playing 1.10d with no problems, but have not tried the latest Gray mod.

Strange, you getting such errors. A couple of questions:
- Do you also get the same errors with plain 1.10d ?
- Did you play before with previous versions (pre 1.10d ?) with no problems ?

And a sugestion that might be silly:
The messages sugest a memory problem. (Did you change your RAM or OS ?). You could allways try and lower the option "Memory usage" in the options menu, to, eg 25%. It would not hurt and might help.

Hope everything gets sorted out :cwboy:

Thanks for the tip. Don't have a saved game on this, but I'll save frequently from now on to see if others can duplicate.

Turns out I DID save the game pre-crash, and I CAN duplicate the problem. The three save files that seem to be relevant are at these links if anyone wants to try it:

http://www.mediafire.com/?wmmndjw1wrh
http://www.mediafire.com/?dnj5yzzy2d3
http://www.mediafire.com/?b2hzezgnyjm

Here's what to do. Upon opening the save (playing Union against AI), go immediately to D. Farragut's fleet in NYC. Then just start "messing around" with him and his ships. Hit his promote button, drag him away from his ships, click on his fleet sans him, etc. After about 3 to 5 such "fiddlings with," the game always crashes for me.
