Railroad travel, especially by lone generals

Tue Apr 29, 2008 6:47 pm

I am a bit puzzled by the apparant slowness of railroad travel in the game, especially by lone generals. I have had a bunch of them in transit from DC to central IL now for a solid two months, and they're still 28 days away from their destination. They travel at a speed of two days per region, which, even allowing for the comparative technical backwardness of the age, especially out West, single track lines etc., seems not really competitive compared to riding on horseback! I suspect the game does not differentiate between troops and lone generals (if it doesn't, should it?), so I suppose that's the average movement speed for large formations, but it does not still seem rather slow? Just wondering. :bonk:

Something must be wrong with your game :bonk:
In mine, RR speed is just 1 day per region! :bonk: :bonk: And its the same for lone generals or full corps.
I agree 1 day per region is still to much for lone generals but it seems to be an engine limitation. Still at 1 day/region is not too bad.
But i don't have a clue about why yours take 2 days...
Do you have enough RR transport capacity??
Could this be a bug??

I assumed lone generals travel faster than say an artillery brigade. That units will also tarvel more slowly by any mode with artillery and supply attached - it semed logical or should that be illogical for lone generals to travel at the same rate as Armies with supply atttached?

We are talking about Railroad movement, not normal movement.
So, loaded on a train, a gun moves at the same speed than a guy.
Of course, in this i'm not taking into account the logistic problems of transporting by train a body of say 10.000 people...
In any case, the maximum movement speed the ACW engine can manage seems to be 1 region per day. So this is the RR speed for all kind of units.
Probably adecuate to full regiments/divisions transportation with all his logistic problems, but too slow for a single guy with his "aide de camp"
To simulate fast travels by lone leaders (by RR or any other means) the best solution IMHO is the redeployment.

In the course of a game I have had occasion to move a General byRR/Water and across land with no transport links. This does allow for a wide variation in movement speeds. I tend to save my redeploys for Field Hospitals/Engineers and artillery units. Moving a general with redeploy seems a bit inefficient.

I had not tried that with the new patch yet. Only with 1.09e.Have to admit it was handy being able to move those artillery units.

Thanks, Arsan.

I have ample RR capacity. I always end up with excess, and I have built 20+ locomotives each turn from game start; it's now February '62. The rail lines are not interrupted, and I checked the itinerary, region for region, when I first started them off to the West, and again now ... there is no break anywhere, they do exactly one region in two days all along the line. They are five lone one-star generals with no wagons or anything, and the rail line runs through 100% Northern-held territory in PA, OH, IN, IL. :innocent:

Any idea what could be wrong with my game, then? And do you suppose it affects both sides, or do the Rebs rail at double speed all the while? :bonk:

Gladly, as soon as I get home. Which files, exactly? Will one turn's .trn and .ord do?

I ve had some probles with this.

If a stack with railroad "clicked" has a leader, and I get out of the stack this leader and send it far away, railmove-click UNCLICKS, so move is 2 MP / area, really I did move by horse instead of RR.

I must click again the RR to make leader move at RR speed.

That's it! I checked this out the same way you suggested in the other thread, and indeed, the button was not clicked. Sorry for being so dumb. :bonk:

Here's to wishing the game engine could handle "half day" rail moves... :p leure:

In addition there is a code-structure condition that makes the minimal travel time per region being 1 day (as 1 day is the lowest time entity in the game)...it cannot be less...a technical limit in the engine :cwboy:

Gray: have you ever tried a translink that goes two regions away?
I know, it wouldn't get 'cut' properly, but does it work?
Since the latest [1.10 ?] patch allows minor river crossings to be blocked by a fleet, maybe a 'two region' rail link could be blocked by the region between... :siffle:

OK. Back to my WIA nest.... :niark:

I would like to see redeploy rules absolutely limited to Leaders/HQs only.

Totally agree Gray. I can see the sense for players to be able to auto redeploy HQ's even leaders at a pinch but other types, ....nah....for me, and I accept I'm probably in a minority, too gamey.

As for the general movement speeds by rail personally I have always accepted these as being an abstraction where some I win, in say the case of being able to move an army of 50K by rail a region in a single day :niark: and some like moving an individual leader I lose. :p leure:
