What's the problem with Fremont?

The only visible trait he has it Hated Occupier ... which is something about declaring martial law. The manual or the tooltip give no other explanation. But at least in my game, something seems to be the matter with his CP. Alone, he provides 6 CP, which is fine for a three star outside the chain of command (12/2). But the moment I put him in a stack, he does something that makes his CP contribution negligible. To wit: I had him in a force that had, apart from him, two divisions and a spare * leader, for a total CP need of 8. Three * and Fremont (***) just sufficed to provide that. I moved him from there to a stack equally composed, except that one of the division commanders is a ** (Hamilton). That stack is sufficiently commanded without Fremont (8 CP needed, and 8 CP provided by one ** and two *, 16/2 = 8), but add Fremont, and it's just 8 CP all the same. So in the first case, Fremont ends up adding just 2 CP, and in the second, his contribution is 0 CP.

So, either I am missing something (what?), or Fremont is suffering from a negative CP trait that is not showing ... or what? :bonk:

The maximum CP that a stack that is out of the chain of command can generate is 8. You can not increase the CP number by adding more commanders to the stack. So that has nothing to do with Fremont, i think you are just trying to find an excuse to hang him. :niark:

The maximum CP of a stack can be increased via putting a leader with the "good commander" or "gifted commander" traits, putting a signal squad in the stack, or turning this stack into a corps etc.. You can find more details on this in Hobbes' quick reference guide or Rafiki's wiki, they are both stickies in the forum.

So that's it. 16 CP max / 2 = 8 CP. Quite simple. Why didn't I think of that? I probably thought the stack maximum is not, in addition, halved when being outside the chain-of-command.

Is that in the manual? :innocent:

Something still seems to be the matter with Fremont though ...

I plot a move for a stack with troops and get 12 days.

I plot the same move with Fremont, alone, and get 5 days. Fine.

Now I plot the same move with Fremont *and* the stack and get 17 days - how's that? :bonk:

And yes, I made sure it was one move, and not a return trip and then back there again. ;)

Maybe he was not active and gave an additional penalty to movement?

Add Bad Breath and BO, FLATULENCE and anything else that comes to mind.If he could not find his arse then he might have had some social problems as well?
