Why is this a great game?

Sat Apr 12, 2008 4:38 am

So often we get wrapped up in the minor things that we don't like about a game...I thought I'd take a minute and talk about why this is a great game...maybe you'd like to add your thoughts?

I love the way the game plays...it has a real feel for the strategic decisions that were made in the Civil War. The game focuses upon the strategy and seldom drifts into unnecessary details.

The graphics of the map are excellent, it's simply great to look at...

The personalities of the leaders adds a personal flavor that adds a lot of depth to the game.

What do you like?

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I get so caught up in the decision making and how you need to plan 5 moves ahead, and be able to adjust when you plan is foiled. I think the economic/political options are at the right level, not too much micromanagement.

The best for me is that you dont have the 100% control of the troops.

Also, the Evasion and posture engines are very interesting and innovative. (Search/Evade)

Also, you can go deep into - micromanagement - if you wish, although it seems not... To win with the hardest options you ll need it, but against easy it s not imperative.

The game offers variety. It allows me the posibility of developing different strategies to fight as CSA.I get chance to play with my own style of play that other games did not offer?
It is addictive and infuriating at same time - troops dont always do what you want them to do.
I play with max FOW - just so there is always the element of the unknoiwn and the capacity for surprises.
I just had a general killed - and I like that element of game as well. No risk then no fun?
I get to be to some extent Prseident of CSA and also employ what if strategy within my game play?

This game is by far...hands down...the best ACW title in existence. It tops the Battleground Series, the Tiller Games, Forge of Freedom...hell even "Army of the Hearland" a great board game.

It's addictive and fun and I'm probably going to lose at least and hour of sleep every night because of it.

For my part, I love the Depth there is in respect to the units (names, etc.) and leaders. Being able to form my own divisions, corps, and armies is another one of my favorite aspects.

Hmm, I think you're comparing cherries to grapefruits.

AACW is strategic/operational. the BS and HPS titles are tactical (in the latter case with a simple operational overlay).

In some ways, I appreciate the BS and especially the HPS titles more.

They're all great games. Except maybe for FoF. :siffle:

The idea of posture, how supply was collected and forwarded and how intel was collected based on hide values, etc. (the latter two being 'under the hood') was what drew me to BoA and then to AACW. Well, that and the beautiful graphics.

I am a student of the ACW and of war in general. I have MANY games of all kinds. This game is the most accurate simulation of strategic/tactical combat in the 19th century ... bar none. IMHO :p apy:
