I don't need that much Cav.

So, anytime I try and buy infantry brigades as the CSA I'm stuck with some cav. unit inside the monster stack of guys. One isn't too bad, but when I have one in every brigade I buy I start to feel like the overall strength of the division will be brought down.

Is my thinking flawed with that, and if it is, am I supposed to be buying and using a ton of militia men instead?

You want that cav in there for their detection/patrol values. They make your divisions much more effective. Many times, just due to the brigade compositions, you will have two in each division. This can be avoided though, with out too much effort.

I know the ideal division only has one cav reg in it, but if i end up with 2 i usually don't mind. 3 or more is a waste i'd say.

I like to have two for role-play reasons (scouting multiple areas, maintaining scouting while foraging as well, etc) even though there is little in-game effect on that front.

As far as a real game reason, I have noticed that in some engagements my cavalry regiments take some rough hits, so to maintain an effective presence I like to have two. And if the difference between victory and defeat is a few stat points of difference between them and a line unit, you probably shouldn't be fighting that battle anyway.
