River Navigability Issues

Is anyone looking at navigability issues on the rivers?

I know that there has been some discussion about the backdoor to New Orleans through White Lake

Other things I find 'interesting' are the extent of navigability on the Oconee and Altamaha in Georgia...others in Georgia as well

Furhter, I don't have refs handy, but my understanding is that the Tennessee was not navigable beyond Muscle Shoals Alabama which would be the middle Tennesee adjacent to Florence and Tuscumbia Alabama.

I also have read that the Cumberland was not navigable above Nashville except in the winter and spring.

If nothing else transit times on the smaller rivers should be huge to represent the difficulty of Navigation.

There was some discussion (not recently that I know of) of changing the river terrain types during different times of year and different weather conditions. I don't think it is possible yet. The best we can do right now is create mud in these areas. If it was possible, I think it would make a great mod (and get included in 'vanilla' eventually). The ability will probably be added in conjunction with the ability to build new railroads during the war.

Fortunately, this discussion happened concurrently with another thread about weather. We could create mini-zones for these areas and give them higher probabilities of mud or other conditions at certain times of the year, as long as someone has time to do the research and the mod (doesn't necessarily have to be the same someone for both).

If you would like to furnish information regarding the various rivers and their navigability and provide links to such possible confirming information, it would greatly be appreciated and I would gladly reflect those historical river navigation changes into the game data files.

I'll do some digging and see what I can turn up...my free time is limited at the moment but should get better after 1 June. I'll post whatever I find in this thread.

The civil and military authorities seem to be laboring under a great mistake in regard to the true key of the war in the Southwest. It is not the Mississippi but the Tennessee river. All the military preparations made in the West indicate that the Mississippi river is the point to which the authorities are directing their attention. On that river many battles must be fought and heavy risks incurred before any impression can be made on the enemy, all of which could be avoided by using the Tennessee river.
