Confused

Tue Feb 05, 2008 4:39 am

Ok let me start out by saying... I like what I see in the game but have a few questions? I bought this game because I used to play a game way back in the day called "Civil war Generals 2" I was at best buy the other day and thought sweet a new Civil war game so I snapped it up and got it home and installed it. after flipping through the manuel and going through the in game tutotial. I find myself really really confused.

I like to play as the Confederates, these are the things I find confusing.

1. it seems that all the battles are simmed Do I not control the Gen. on the field of battle?

2. there are so many things going on I am not sure where to begin....

3. Do I control everything or do I focus on one or two reagons?

4. over all I find it all really confusing.

Simply put can someone simplify the for me explaine to me a good way to approch this game. I thought it was gonna be a fum turn based civil way game plain and simple. Kinda a build and battle game like for example
"Total war " using the Civil war as a backdrop.

Thanks all

Well, this definately isnt a civil war version of total war.....which i also love....however this is probably the most realistic "full campaign" of the entire civil war that is around. this game is excellent ....but very in depth and I know what you mean by confusing....the computer handles a lot of the actual mechanics of the battles etc. so really you are in the position of the "grand strategic general" consider yourself in jefferson davis's or abe's shoes....... it would not be realistic for them to actually be on the battle field directing every movement, not at this level. I suggest you read the manual, do all the tutorials and take your time .....this game is worth it.

Ok, Cool thanks for the tip. I guess theres more to the game then I though, after reading alot of positive feed back on other posts I will definatly put alot of time into the game as it looks way awesome.

It just feel so overwhelming theres so much to it I can't tell half the time what I am doing, I start out with so many city's to supply and defend I seem to get lost trying to play the game, and the USA just rolls in and starts taking my city's.

But I suppose we were all there at one time or another

Thanks

Hi Groove74, and welcome to the forums! Image

You have indeed found the right place for getting your questions about the game answered. If a search doesn't give you the answers you seek, by all means feel free to post your questions, and you'll find that the people around here are more than willing to help you out :)

I had to abandon my first PBEM and go back to class even though I had already played Birth of America. The smallest scenario's are not much fun to play but they are very good for learning the basics. It's a game well worth sticking through the learning curve.

Well after spending all day and most of tonight Doing the tutorial. I find that the tutorial is making it hard to learn the game for 2 major reasons.

1. it has alot of typos which lead to not understanding what is wanted.

2. it may say something like go to "madison" but it like other games dose not show you where Example "madison" is it just says go there so you spend like a hour searching the map for this city. At one point it wanted me to something in decator but there are like 2 of em' so I was really lost.

In short this is a chore just trying to play the game, The sad thig is this is not my first war game. I have played war games for years. I just find this one really confusing.

That being said I see alot to the game I really like and I see that it is very well done except for the tutorial.

thanks

PS just thought I would share my experience so far

well thanks to everyone for your patience with my confusion and all your helps

Groove, don't forget to check out the Strategies section also, there may be some answers inside that section that could help you.

I believe once you get the hang of it, you will be hooked like all us are.

I found that printing out the tutorial printed documentation was helpful. In some places it's different than the actual tutorial but it also has a better display of where to go when you are told to move. Look at C:\Program Files\AGEod's American Civil War\Docs\tutorial_illustrated_v030.pdf (location may vary if you changed the default install location.)

The v030 is a bit outdated, afaik it still contains the Division HQ.
You can get the newer version here: http://myfreefilehosting.com/f/c08f7f9f01_6.31MB

One thing you will definatly want to do when you try a full campaign, I build lots of usless militia, 1. because they are cheap, 2. they are good for defending towns from pesky cavalry raids....which are sure to happen if you dont cover all your main towns. they are also very quick to get built. just a small tip, but i found it really frustrating when i first tried it, because i would build a nice sized corps but they would simply go around and wreak havok on my rail lines. cavalry are a good option to as they prevent other forces from moving around you easily as well. try building a defensive force of militia and cavalry spread around the major angles of attack, then get a nice army force set up to advance.
