PC Specs

Tue Oct 30, 2007 12:06 pm

Thanks to my team, the Boston Red Sox, winning the World Series I now have a nest egg that is starting to burn a hole in my pocket.

I am thinking of getting a new PC and for this I need some help from the Forum. What specs should I be looking for in order to get the best out of AACW, BOA and NCP? Is Vista going to be a problem for me?

Any help or advice given would be most welcomed.

Thanks

Time to upgrade yeah, because Pocus is thinking about buying a new PC... :king:

We are very busy today, finishing NCP master 1.00 version, but Philippe might find some time to give you some infos.

Thanks, Korrigan,

I look forward to hearing from Philippe (and any others).

Typical, Rafiki,

You quickly got to the nub of my question.

I just love using that "smiley" :D

But seriously, there are quite a few that have been reporting problems getting AACW to run on Vista, but at the same time, I think most of them were able to get it going in the end. So, I think you can expect it to work, but you may need to work in order to get it to work. But it all works out in the end :)

That is exactly what has me worried. I am not the most PC-literate guy in the world.

Neither am I, but the only problem Vista gave me with AGEod-games yet was a missing "DLL-file"-message when running AACW. After installing it, Vista (Home Premium) didn't give me any problems. The solution for that problem can be found here: http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?t=3122

However, if You, like me, are old and have a collection of games back from DOS- or Win95-days that are dear to Your heart, brace Yourself for having to part with quite a lot of them forever.. :(

Regards, Henry :)

Thanks, Henry,

You came up with the second thing that worries me. However, as you have shown me the solution to the first problem, I am hopeful.

Well, we (AGEod) are pragmatic lads:

Pocus, the lead coder, is using a very basic PC with XP to develop the AGE engine.
First, because, this way he knows real time the minimum specs for our games
Second, because he is not paid enough to buy a new one :king:
(However, we're going to offer him something decent for X-Mas)

Celtic, our second coder, is using a recent PC with Vista.

Hence, we should guarantee you that our next generation games will be fully Vista ready. :indien:

Once again, Pocus will be able to tell you more about this, I'm just the PR guy you know... :cwboy:

VGN will be fully Vista compatible, but NCP and SPA (I really like to use this acronym) are still using our current DirectX engine.

I will get a new puter, true. As Celtic is on Vista, I will have to stay on XP, so that we have both system available. This is the most logical decision, but I guess you all realize that the truth is that I don't want to have this memory and buggy resource hog which is Vista, so I will ask the shop to reformat the puter in XP :king:

The problems with Vista are as a matter of facts problems with video drivers which are lacking compatibility with older DirectX versions. ATI and NVidia offer a very good support for the devs who use advanced rendering techniques (seen in FPS eg), but they don't much care to double-check if what they add break something in very basics functions which are mostly used by independent studios best not named ;)

And for the specs Pocus, do we have a rough idea of what kind of specs would be needed for VGN?

My personnal advice would be to go for a N-Vidia Video Card, despite raw performances last ATI drivers are way too buggy... :grr:

This is a bit early to say and CPU frequency don't mean much things nowadays. I just can't guess for now, sorry.
