You can't compare AACW to RTR.

This game is set in strategic, politic, economic, historic context and strives to highlight everything in the civil war but the 3d battles which represent the core of RTW/RTR. Those are simulated after very complex and detailed mechanics and it's right where your pre-planned strategy is aimed to.

In CA environment you beat the AI turn after turn, the armies you face are always the same and in the 3d battle it's always the same story.
Here you are beaten by the AI turn after turn, and at the standard difficulty level.

I have the game and have played a couple of campaigns so far. I like it but you can hardly compare it to Rome. The map in S&H goes from Spain to China, so it's much bigger. Graphic wise, the game is really not great and don't expect battles to be any near to those from Rome. I would rather compare it to Spartan by Slitherine. Battles are important but short. The most interesting aspect to me is the way you have to work with your personnel. The caracter of your generals, your leader, your ministers and so on is very important. Various aspects like loyalty, popularity or honour affect your empire.

I think there's a demo. You may also check the manual and the walktroughs (campaign and battle) to get an idea.

Thanks, Anguille. I saw some screenshots of the S&H and I know the game graphics is basic. Did you find the game enjoyable? Is it challenging or tedious because the game world is too big?

I like the game. I am currently playing as one of the Indian factions. The game is challenging for a couple of reasons: the personnel and the happiness of the population. I've experienced a rebellion shortly and have lost many cities. So it's not that easy to have a good balance. The fact that the goal is total conquest makes the game quiet long...but you may decide to choose your own objectives. One good thing is that you can put your cities to "autopilot"...it raises the satisfaction of the population and avoids too much micromanagement in the end-game.
