Some questions before buying the game

Tue Mar 21, 2006 2:42 pm

Hello everybody,

I have received very good feedback about this game so I want to buy it but I have some questions:

1.- Is still available the option to download the software if you buy the CD version?

2.- I want to use a laptop (P4, 1Gb RAM, 32Mb video card) to play. I know the video card is behind the minimun requirements so could I play it with this hardware configuration?

3.- The latest updates are the 1.04 patch and the updated map?.

Congratulations, this game is going to be a big success !!!

#1: There really is no compelling reason to buy the CD over download ($47USD versus $30USD ). If the boxed version comes with a printed manual, it is only 30 pages.

#2: I had it on my laptop P4/2.8GHz, 512Mb RAM, and 64Mb VRAM). It was playable, but I was not pleased with the performance. Mainly it was a memory problem as it was constantly reading from the disk. I now play on my desktop with 1,024 RAM and it is much better.

#3: As of yesterday 1.04 is the latest version.

There should be a demo available. So, it probably pays to download it and throw it on your laptop to see the performance.

Septimianus,

#1 -- I'm not sure if you can still download if you purchase the boxed set. But you can burn your download of the game so that you have a backup. I found the download to run incredibly smoothly, about an hour for almost 300mb. Also, as Markshot mentioned, the manual is only 27 pages. You can easily ALT-TAB out to the game to the manual .pdf.

#2 -- I run the game on my laptop (P4, 1.4ghz, 1 gig RAM, and a pretty weak video card, I think it's 16 or 32). The game runs just fine ... I think that RAM is the most important thing, not your video card.

Thank you everybody for the information provided. Based on previous experiences with another games maybe I will have some lags because of the 32Mb. video card but I can live with that.

Pocus, Could you clarify if the download is still available when you buy the CD?

I'm unsure now that the CD is being sent, I'm not completely up to date on commercial informations. PhilThib should respond to you as soon as he has finished the numerous administratives tasks of the day.

Btw, grab the demo and tell me if it runs.

To speed up the game, go to the armory there is a thread about that: Defragment your HD (all partitions) before doing anything else. Laptop HD are a bit slow, and they don't really like to manipulate the 1700 regions bitmaps ;)

When you buy the CD, you should receive it by mail within 5-10 days, depending on where you live.

As the CD is now available, we do not provide the free download anymore (because that creates too much tension on our server :p leure: )...unless you are very nice and ask me gently :sourcil:

Pocus, I have a Toshiba laptop, P4 2,66Gz., 1Gb. RAM, 30GB. HD, 2Gb. page file, NVIDIA GForce 4 420 Go 32Mb.

Playing with the software mouse cursor the response is not good, floating and trying to follow me when I move the mouse. With the hardware one is OK, no lags. I am also able to scroll around the map, it is only a little slow. The only thing is that when you are scrolling the background music has interruptions. The CPU is near always 100%.

All of this is applied to the demo and the full game (with 1.04 patch).

PhilThib, Thank you for the offer but I could not wait and your game is now in my laptop :niark:

Hi again,

the video card is a bit short in memory, so it means the hard disk will swap often, and as laptop don't have top notch HD, so it's slow...

some steps to speed up the game:

a) defrag your hard disk: the system partition and the one where BoA is in.
b) don't scroll with a filter, if you don't need it everytime.
c) scroll at 100% zoom.
d) have high memory, region precache, texture at start checked (in 1.04 or demo).

Hello Pocus,

Thank you for your support. Taking into account the video card I have I think the performance is OK :siffle:

PBEM - but I am a little confused about it. Since when I read the directions, it sounds like you need two people to play and a third to host the game (referee or something)?

However, I have hot seat on my own PC just fine so far.

no, the habits of games with such scheme (Stars!, Dominions, Space Empire) is to have one of the player in charge of the hosting. You need only a friend and you to PBEM, but it involves manually sending the file by mail. Its crude, but it works.

yes, we would like to include TCP/IP in the next project. Not a 100% guarantee though, it will depends if we finish the gameplay additions which are a priority.

Quick question here...when I purchase the download version, is it fully patched up? Or do I have to also download the patches, map etc?

ok.
Update: The new version won't be available for download before wednesday or thursday, there is a delay between the completion of the version and when it is online on the telechargez.fr company server (AGEod don't handle directly the download, its another company).

Well I pretty well made up my mind. Good thing there is a demo otherwise I would have been far more reticent in purchasing BOA based on the Wargamer review. As I understand it after downloading BOA i install the 1.04b update and the 1.04 map update. Is this correct? Great game BTW.

1.04b is only an incremental update. Meaning it takes you from:

1.04 -> 1.04b

I think the download is going to be 1.02. So, you need to first do the 1.04 update thing.

The map update can be done or not done at any point in the process, since it only impacts the appearance of the map and not the game play itself.

the map update is a separate download

after patching to 1.04 you must patch to 1.04b which is an incremental patch)
