Disappearing General

Thu Sep 06, 2007 1:23 pm

I was using Samuel Cooper the Confederate general, to train up some conscripts in Richmond. He did so effectively and then promptly disappeared from the game, though the tab in which the units were located continued to be called "Samuel Cooper's Command". My reading of Civil War history makes no mention of this unique ability. Has anyone else encountered this?

Also, though Robert E Lee is now available in theory the game says that he cannot leave in area he is in i.e. Richmond. When I tried to replace Bureaugard, Lee was not available to replace him - only A S Johnston. Is this some kind of game mechanism to prevent a too early promotion to Army commander?

Lee will be released sometime in early '62'. Cooper disappears (retires) about the same time as Lee becomes active.

Funny thing then is that I am still in October 1861 - a little early for Cooper to retire. I have only had him for one turn!

Hmm......well with most appearences and dissapearences. There is a range of time. But I don't remember him retiring that early in my games.

He becomes the Adjuntant and Inspector General of the CSA.
You can read about him here: http://www.generalcooper.com/eyrs.htm

Quite interesting. Thanks.

I wonder to what degree this is reflected in the game?

I think the game considers that this role means that he isnt available as an active commander. (which he never is because he is locked)

His removal from the roster gives the other 3 stars a step up but I dont think they can go higher so I'm not sure why they do this except as a counterpart to Genl. Scott retiring on the other side.
