Gunray’s Civil War II Enhancement Mod – Version 1.0 Released

Hello Civil War II community,

My friend Naturamix and I still regularly play Civil War II, and over time we noticed many small things that could be improved, corrected, or expanded. I originally started modding the game for our own sessions, but the project gradually became much larger, so I decided to share it with the community.

I have now finished Version 1.0 of Gunray’s Civil War II Enhancement Mod.

The goal of the mod is to improve and expand the vanilla Civil War II experience without turning it into a completely different game. It focuses on historical accuracy, generals and admirals, bug fixes, balance improvements, visual updates, and expanding systems that were limited or unfinished in vanilla.

Gunray is my other account and the account under which the mod is published on Nexus Mods.

Version 1.0 Highlights

  • 130+ generals received new historical abilities reflecting their real strengths and weaknesses.
  • Improved general names, biographies, portraits, and historical data.
  • Added custom portraits to generic generals that originally had no unique portrait.
  • Visual updates to the Message Panel, Days Counter, Ledger, and more.
  • Expanded the visible Ability Display from 4 to 8 abilities.
  • Added a new Seniority System that rewards generals for participating in the capture of important locations.
  • Added a cooldown system preventing repeated Seniority farming from the same locations.
  • Completely reworked the Prisoner Exchange System with Limited, Moderate, Large, and Major exchanges.
  • Added historical Dix–Hill Cartel events for the beginning and breakdown of organized prisoner exchanges.
  • Reduced Army command ranges, making Army HQ placement and Corps organization more important.
  • Adjusted and standardized the costs of all Industry options.
  • Rebalanced several Regional Decisions, unit costs, and Ulysses S. Grant’s Seniority.
  • Replaced several fictional or incorrect leaders with historical officers.
  • Fixed many vanilla bugs, broken events, scenario issues, map connections, and data problems.
  • Added numerous smaller script fixes, historical corrections, and cleanup changes.

What Is the Goal of the Mod?

The idea is simple:

Vanilla Civil War II, but more polished, more historical, more varied, and with several underdeveloped systems expanded.

I do not want to completely redesign Civil War II. I want to preserve what makes the original game unique while improving areas that are unfinished, inconsistent, historically inaccurate, bugged, or too easy to exploit.

The mod is still an ongoing project and will continue to receive updates.

Feedback and Bug Reports

Feedback, suggestions, and historical corrections are always welcome.

If you find a bug, please report it on the Nexus Mods page so I can investigate and fix it.

If you think a general should receive a different ability, lose an existing ability, or gain an additional one, feel free to post your suggestion as well. Please explain why and, if possible, provide a historical source.
I am very open to community suggestions and will likely include good historically supported ideas in future updates.

Special thanks to Blood and Thunder for the custom portrait and visual work.

Woah - somehow I missed this. This is very good - incorporates some of the community fixes that I knew already but also some new stuff.

Question - will this work if I apply it to an existing save?

Thanks

Hey, thanks for your interest!

No. The mod requires a new campaign. Installing it during an existing campaign may cause changes or fixes to not work correctly.

I’m currently working on v1.0, which should be released within the next couple of weeks. It will include:
More bug fixes
Full names for every general
Traits/abilities for every general

And there’s more planned for v1.0 as well!

All currently changes for v1.0 are already listed on the Nexus Mods page, so you can check there for the full changelog and upcoming features.

I will certainly keep a look-out for the new version!

A shame, because my gaming habits and timetable means I've been fighting my current CW2 campaign for longer than the actual war  But one day I'll get around to a new one.

Thanks!
