Extra Railroads

Wed Aug 08, 2007 4:29 pm

On the main map, there is a railroad line from Baton Rouge to Texas. During the Civil War, I don't beleive there was a railroad accross Southern Louisiana, and in fact that line was not built until after 1870.

There were two rail lines that extended West of the Mississippi into Louisiana. The first, through Vicksburg, had Monroe,LA as it's terminus. The second, through New Orleans, terminated at the railhead at Brashear City,LA (Berwick is about right here, and Brashear City was captured with a huge pile of supplies in '63 by Taylor in the Bayou Teche campaign).

Texas had a railroad network centered in Houston, but that extended only as far as Sabine Pass, NOT into Louisiana. The railway link from Texas to New Orleans, the Southern Pacific Railway, was not completed until after 1870.

I can't find an authoritative link unfortunately to prove it, other than some ACW books I own, but I am SURE that is correct.

As another note, Little Rock was also NOT on the rail net. The line from Memphis terminated at Madison, AR.

I apologize if others have point this out. Am I wrong, or am I right?

I may not have metioned, but there is also no rail line running Monroe/Shreveport/Milan, and into Texas. None. That line ended at Monroe, LA. There was no rail link to Texas, in southern or northern LA.

PS, there was also no rail line from Selma to Montgomery Alabama, which in effect meant that there was no railroad between Georgia and the Mississippi valley once Corinth fell. However, the Confederates had a train ferry service on the Tombigbee river between those two points that worked quickly, and did effectively close that gap, so that line should probably stay.

That's it, otherwise the rail lines look good, but the ones West of the Mississippi need to be cleaned up.

You are right.

There is a discussion of apocryphal (anachronistic, ahistoric, whatever term you prefer) railroads here. After a good start, it has been inactive for almost a month. I think several of the major players got involved in other projects.

www.csa-railroads.com is the authoritative website (with great maps) for confederate railroads.

Wow. This is very important stuff for game validity. I hope this topic picks back up. I'll join it.
