Sure, republicans (I mean, not the party) had always been against democracy, like monarchists,
and so when in 18s republicans begin to praise democracy for their republic (which is participative aristocracy), monarchists went upset, telling republicans are big liars, but soon even monarchists went telling they were democrats, as they saw this lie is very efficient, still nowadays.
So, in France even Charles Maurras went even telling that his monarchy is "anarchy plus one",
as anarchy is what is the more like democracy, far more than monarchy (power of one) and republic (power of an artistocracy, but backed by some people).
