The Russian Empire and the World, 1700–1917Code: Select all
The Russians obtained only an armistice for two years; negotiations
continued in Constantinople, where peace was signed in 1700. Russia
gained Azov and retained Taganrog, but agreed to raze the forts it had
built on the lower course o f the Dniepr between Ochakov and the
Zaporozhian Cossack zone and to leave deserted (inculte et inhabité) the
area between the Perekop isthmus and the Mius River, the approaches to
the Crimea. The Ottomans agreed to end the custom by which the tsar
was still paying tribute to the Crimean khan: it had been argued that the
payment of tribute to a vassal of the sultan made Russia a vassal state of
the Ottoman Empire, the successor of the Golden Horde. Thus by 1700,
Russia finally emancipated itself from its vassalage to the world of its other
parent culture, the Turco-Mongol oecumene, of which it had been a marginal
phenomenon for so long.
In game terms:
- The game is right on start, no war with the Turks, an armistice until peace.
- Azov should not be russian until after the treaty, Move the fleet to Taganrog.
- The tsardom should have more money at its disposal after the treaty. Seems incredible it was still paying a tribute to a vassal of the ottomans, so the tsar was a vassal of a vassal?
