pbem hell ....

Wed Jul 18, 2007 2:18 am

I'm guessing I can't read or follow directions ....

I send "a" *.trn file to my opponent (if I'm the USA, do I send the CSA or the USA *.trn) ? I'm the host ....

Then can I create a separate folder later on and dump the returned ord file(s) into it ?

My opponent sent his ord as part of a zip file, contents listed it as an ord file, unzipping also added a txt extension. Game doesn't see/recognize it ? What if I later create a new directory within the save folder structure, how to I direct the game to go and look elsewhere ?

I admit, the witp style of pbem file transfer appears more straightforward ..... But then again, it must be me as few others are complaining about problems .....

If you are the USA and the host then you send your opponent the CSA .trn file. I do not know why you are getting a .txt added to the end of the file when unzipping. Maybe you can just right click on the file and rename it by simply deleting the .txt so it ends in .ord. Why would you want to create another folder and dump it in there?? I suppose you could, but not sure why? I don't know of a way to direct the program to look in another directory. I don't think you can. It should work, it has for me. My biggest problem is remembering to email my opponent when I finish my turn!!!! Or emailing him and forgetting to attach the turn.

Also remember you can rename your game from the main screen interface in order to keep track of your differents games. I always do that when I start a PBEM, rather than to have 5 different 1861 games I rename them after my opponent.

I wonder how I would fare in a PBEM game of AACW. I should reread the rule, I'm a little hazy on some points :king:

Oh don't worry, I'm a beginner too. Just discovering the game really... :siffle:

I've just read an interesting AACW strategic analysis in the last Cyberstratege issue, you might want to read it.

As a matter of fact, I've just finished my BoA game against Napoleon from the Armchair General magazine (AGEod wins!) so I might have a free slot... :sourcil:

So, if I am the Union player, I send my opponent the CSA.trn file ....
He sends me the ord file back. In this case, which ord file is he sending, the CSA ? I wait to get it back, and then load it, make my moves and hit end turn ?

I believe he has done this and I save it in the "latest directory" (still would like a means to directing the game, where to go look for the file but that's a story for another day. I start the program and go to load game. The one at the bottom of the list has the little red lock symbol, but it is a dated USA file (can tell be the file date). Game seems blind to the fact that I have ANYTHING more recent in the directory.

Again, this has to be something I'm doing wrong here, but what ?

Your opponent must NOT end turn. He just plots his move, and sends you the .ord file. You should then save (or unzip) the file into the main directory that has the same name of the game you are playing......i.e. jimandbobcampaign. There will be other directories in that main directory, but they are old turns. DON'T save it in one of those. You are right, though, suspecting the little red lock or paper clip or whatever. There should be a red paper clip next to the name of your game for both the CSA and USA. This denotes, I believe, that there is a current .ord file for both sides. It is really quite simple once you get on to it.

Here is how I do it. I load the game (assuming I have my opponent's turn), I resolve the turn. Then, after the turn is resolved, I go thru all the mailbox messages. As I am going through those I make whatever moves, create divisions, change postures, etc. After I have made all the moves I want to make I generally do my new builds, drafts, taxes, etc. Then I save the game. After I save the game (don't advance the turn after you have made your moves), I exit and email my opponent (that's the hard part....remembering to email him his turn!!!! :niark: ) the USA.trn(I am the CSA) file. He plots his move without advancing the turn. He saves the game when he is finished plotting, and sends me the USA.ord file. I save it in our game's directory, and start all over. It works pretty easy once you get on to the system.

Cool and congrats for your victory! If I feel some interest, yes I would like to try a real game of AACW against an opponent of flesh (although I'm unsure you fall in this category).
