Burn Baby, Burn

Wed Apr 27, 2016 6:16 pm

Huge amounts of general supply accumulate at major, Southern, coastal cities. If these stocks fall into Union hands, it relieves them of supply problems for a long time.

Questions: if looks like you might not hold, should a targeted depot be burnt the moment an invading force appears off shore?

As it takes 15 days to destroy a depot and only 5 days to land, is it possible to successfully do this? Or does the Southern player just need to face the fact that successful invading forces will always capture a mountain of stocked supplies when costal depots and/or major cites are taken?

Is it possible to destroy supplies stored in a city with out a depot or to reroute the material to another location?

And on another note: alas, gold fields are not destroyed when the city in their area is burned to the ground.

You make a lot of threads about burning stuff... At least I'm not giving you advice on how to burn MY stuff this time.

Yeah, burn it if you can. If you panic burn and the invasion doesn't come you should be able to rebuild with a flatboat.

The tool-tip for burning depots says it takes five days, this is wrong. It takes only a day. A force with orders to burn a depot and then hop on a train will be out of the region in two days.

The main problem with the South burning coastal depots is that most of them can not be burned. If I remember right, only size one depots can be burned.

Sadly, I don't think it is possible to reroute or destroy large stockpiles in vulnerable cities. The Union is almost guaranteed to have large pile of supplies waiting for them. I don't find this to be too realistic, but oh well.

One thing you might be able to do is target the captured depot with partisan and Indian depot raid cards. Its been a while, but I think that a successful use of those RGDs will destroy the stockpile along with the reduction of one depot level.

I have lost a gold mine to destruction in a game before. I think it may have been to a raiding Indian unit. I'm not sure how the rules work on that one, but they can be destroyed somehow...

You cannot target depots you own with the Raid or such RGD's.

I've played around with this a long time ago. The restriction on 'destroying' a depot larger than size 1 can be circumvented, or removed. You can actually resize depots with the correct RGD's if you want to.

The one thing I don't know if it is possible is to actually destroy the 'supply' in the a depot, ie if you destroy the depot, or reduce it's size.

Supply is not actually 'in a depot'. It's all just virtual and pretend. IIRC using an even to reduce a depot from size 5 to size 0--ie the depot was removed--actually did not change the amount of supply in the location at all. The supply simply had nothing to hold it back anymore and it was quickly siphoned off by other nearby depots.

If you've captured a depot outside of your depot-network, or there is no time to siphon off supplies, destroying them is your only choice. But I haven't found the solution to that yet.

There's a bit of pyro in most men. And yeah, I tend to beat a theme to death,

But in my defense, I did work my way through college as a firefighter in the summers.

When you burn, it is possible to exercise a degree of control over your opponent’s strategic plans by making the objective vanish.

Ya, fire is pretty cool.

I've seen you put it to good use. Might as well keep at it. Though, I'm not sure being a firefighter is a valid defense for playing with fire. :neener:
