A Little Help, Please

Wed Jul 04, 2007 4:27 pm

I got the game two days ago. Updated it to 1.05e last night. I haven't really had a meaningful game yet but am enjoying learning it. I played the tutorials and a couple of the battle scenarios. I was looking for a single theater campaign but all of the possible choices say two theaters. So what the heck, I'll jump right in. Ouch. :bonk:

Here is where I'm stuck:

1. Build some elements and merge , up to seven, them into a Brigade. Get some brigades together, up to 18 elements, and merge them into a division either with or without a leader. Get some divisions together and merge them into a corps under a leader of the appropriate rank. No special HQ needs to be build so far, right?
If I want to add a general to a division later, I have to break the division down and merge the general and brigades together again.

2. To build an Army you need a special HQ unit to be built and a general of the appropriate rank. Have I got this wrong cause I cannot find where to build an Army HQ on the Reinforcement screen. I can find HQ replacements, however.

3. Some post refer to setting the replacement rate. In the manual there is mention of a fixed replacement rate but I don't see anywhere to set the rate. I have just misunderstood? I do get that you have to build replacements on the replacement screen but I assumed that replacements were simply routed to the units automatically.

Thanks for the help

Nearly. Generally, brigades are what you buy - you can buy 'brigades' (elements) of 1 unit (regiment or whatever), especially with militia. The 'big' eastern or middle states (Ohio on the US side e.g) will supply brigades with 2-3 inf, and a gun or cavalry integral as a single element. There are also predetermined reinforcement events that give you historical units (these are usually big brigades with a leader built in).
You do not have to keep historical brgades together (you might want to split them to use the leader elsewhere, and you can't put them in a division as is). Thus you generally put your elements (as you call them) straight into a division (with a leader, who enables you to create the div in the first place - this is the closest to a 'div HQ unit' (an active leader, and not having created the current maximum number of divisions yet)
If I want to add a general to a division later, I have to break the division down and merge the general and brigades together again.

See above - you will have to have a leader to create the div in the first place. You can swap leaders later without paying the creation cost again (you know there is one right?). Just disband the div, and reform with the new leader in the same turn, and it wont re-charge you for the creation.

2. To build an Army you need a special HQ unit to be built and a general of the appropriate rank. Have I got this wrong cause I cannot find where to build an Army HQ on the Reinforcement screen. I can find HQ replacements, however.

You probably haven't played long enough. In the campaigns you will get events that release extra HQs for you to build (I can't rember when, but after July 1861 I think). You do get the first HQ as part of the events that create the 2 eastern armies (AotP for CSA, and ANEV for USA)

3. Some post refer to setting the replacement rate. In the manual there is mention of a fixed replacement rate but I don't see anywhere to set the rate. I have just misunderstood? Replacements are routed to units automatically once you have bought the correct type on the replacements (F3) screen. The 'rates' referred to are about how many replacements to buy (they use your finite stock of recruits - buy replacements and they aren't there to use for new units, however don't buy enough, and your understrength units never regain strength). As to how many to buy, well I haven't got to the bottom of that yet. 10% of the total certainly covers it, and zero of any type is a bad idea, I am evolving systems between those 2 extremes!

Hope this all make sense (and I have got the details all right - they are based on me playing the game, rather than any contact with the developers!)
I know: wrong war, wrong country, wrong century. But she's my favourite:nuts:

Thanks. That does help with my confusion.
