leader activation

Sun Jan 10, 2016 11:41 pm

How can I see, why a leader is not active? Is there an easy way?

The little envelope will be white if he's active, brown if he isn't.

Activation depends of his strategic value. That is the first of the three numbers that defines a general capacities.
Each turn a six sided dice is rolled against this value. If the roll is higher than the value the general gets inactive. There are some modifiers, but this is more or less how it works.
So a guy with a 5 or 6 strategic value hardly ever gets inactive, while a guy with a 3 will be inactive half of the time.

To be activated for the turn, a leader must role a d6 >= his strategic rating.

Activated leaders receive a +1drm--die role modifier--to their d6, so activated leaders--even those 3-x-x leaders--tend to remain activated.

Un-activated leaders receive a -1drm--die role modifier--to their d6, so un-activated leaders will tend to remain un-activated.

Very hard fighting can change even a leader with the highest strat rating to un-activated.

Well this explains why Massena always seems to be inactive for me. His Strategic rating is a 3. He is currently inactive so he has to roll a 1 or 2 to activate right?

Correct. So the strat-3 Massena has a 33% chance per turn of becoming activated. After 8 turns, you can say you've had some bad luck, but it's not outside the possibilities.

So this begs the question. Is it worth the hit to promote Davout to Army commander?

I would not. Davout only has the Good Commader trait. As army commander, he would only pass down CPs {Command Points}

You want to promote someone who has the "Gifted Commander" trait so they can pass down abilities. Massena has "Gifted Commander 5" which is why his corp commanders get ability bonuses.

If you want to promote another army commander, I would promote Lannes. He has "Gifted Commander 2" He should be able to pass down abilities while Davout would only pass down CPs.

True but Davout is almost always active and therefore makes the army more speedy on the battlefield. And its my impression that army commanders still enhance their subordinates' traits whatever their traits.

In WON, I have never seen that reference. Not saying it is not true, but I have never seen that before anywhere.

Yes, Massena's army does not have leaders with a high stragtic rating and are not active as much as you would like. Napoleon with his Great Strageist trait passes stats to his corp commanders very well. Since even commanders with poor stats, {Ney, Murat, Beradott} have a 5 - 5 - 5 rating as long as they are close to Napoleon, I run Davout and Bessres down to Italy and make them part of Massena's Army. They don't get any bonuses from Massena but as part of the same army, the can still MTSGs. And they still have better stats than the Massena's other leaders. I try to keep them close to each other for support until Karl's army is mostly destroyed. You have to keep Massena pretty close to Davout and Bessres or they start taking minuses. Since Massena is still in command of the Army, he still passes bonuses to the other Corp leaders which need them. Once Karl's army is mostly destroyed, I remove Davout and Bessres from Massena's army so they can range further away without taking minuses. They will no longer be able to MTSGs but once Karl's army is gone, there isn't any Austrian Army large enough to give those leaders trouble.

Just my 2 cents.

Napoleon still has Soult and Lannes which have ratings of 5 - 5 - 6 and 5 - 6 - 7 while close to Napoleon so he still has a lot of decent leaders around him.
