Cannot form a Defensive Treaty with one of my coalition allies in my PBEM...

I'm playing as Austria and cannot form a Def. Treaty with Russia. How are we supposed to fight together without Def treaty? Is it possible? Is their actually a cap on the number of treaties you can have at a time? We have plenty of positive relation and all of that, it makes no sense...

Also, does Promising local support allow nations to fight together in the same battles?

Being in the coalition means that you are in more than a defensive treaty. In a defensive treaty, you are only required to send troops, if your partner is attacked. In the coalition, your also are required to send troop if if your partner attacks somebody else.

Not assisting your coalition partner(s) can cost you VP's.

Check the diplomacy screen <F6>. You should see that if a coalition partner has DoW'ed (Declaration of War'ed :blink another nation, that your faction too is now at war with that nation. You should also get a message in the mail-box at the bottom right.

Update, apparently I was in the coalition but not really due to some event that fires after losing to the French X amount of times. Now Russia and I have Def treaty etc. Weird.
