I'm not sure what to do with 'Union' Texas Cavalry...

Hi Everybody...

Playing Union (1.06) and I'm not sure what to do after the Sam Houston event fires... I get control of Dallas, Tex. and some quality Cavalry units but they are surrounded deep in Confederate territory. I really hate to abandon these loyal soldiers. I remember in earlier versions trying to march them north but ended up starving them.

My gut says try heading north again but perhaps there are alternatives I'm not finding....

Thanks!

Edit: The event indicates that they are sent there to keep Sam Houston in power so I guess they are supposed to stay there... :(

I do two very different things with these units.
1. I look at cities which are somewhat favorable to the Union and take them staying in Texas. Occupying Matagorda, TX to deny this port to the CSA.
2. I head north. In CW2 you can make it north. Select your path to traverse mostly friendly regions.

They are and were indeed loyal to Houston, so use them to best discomfort the non-loyal Southern faction.

For what it’s worth, if I’m playing Athena, I often send the cavalry up towards Creek Agency in IT to grab stockades and dance around as bait. Athena seems to be sensitive to threats to the upper MO supply route running through Fort Smith and Fayetteville. She often draws off strong forces, which would otherwise be digging in at Springfield or Fayetteville, to chase you.

Sometimes I send the boys in blue to rendezvous with a transport and a handful of other units on the coast. Where they go from there depends on Athena’s commitment to coastal defense.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth.
