Cav Upgrades?

Tue Jun 26, 2007 9:37 pm

i have read here in the forum that eventually cavalry brigades will get larger as the game progresses. i noticed that in the 1864 game, there are units as large as 78, versus earlier they were at 22. how do you get this to happen? i just played a game to the conclusion (1866), and never got any units larger than 22. i also noticed that in the reinforcement menu, the units are still only a 22.

As far as I know, there are only 2 levels of cav, the light (sometimes starting out as conscript), which comes out at 17, and the regular, which comes out at 22. (Shouldn't there be a dragoon equivalent?)

Anyways, conscript upgrades to light (only difference is in quality) and light upgrades to regular (I think... I've seen some elements which I swear started out at 17 become 22...)

the 78 strength unit is probably a brigade of some sort.

There are several specific cav bdes that are larger. The 1st VA Cav grows to good size (5-6 elements I think, 1 being art) and the Laurel Bde is another. Have not seen any larger Union onces, but I have heard several mentioned.

Brigades can not be broken down. Some (most) of the cav are 1 element (regiment) to a 'brigade'. Others are multiple to a 'brigade'.

Don't think of these as brigades, really, they're more of independent commands (which is why they are 1 command point per element.) Capable of conducting raids and such.
