Depots and supply to Richmond

Thu Oct 08, 2015 2:44 pm

What is the best way to get more supply to Richmond to stockpile. I destroyed the depot in st pete and Norfolk thinking that the supply would than travel straight to Richmond, was this a good idea or bad?.

Pretty sure that was bad. Units in the area could have gotten supply from those depots(do you want the division bottling up Fortress Monroe drawing from Norfolk or from Richmond?), and Richmond could have sucked those supplies if Richmond got low.

I would use the opposite strategy of what you're trying to do in order to achieve the same ends. Build a cheap flatboat in Hampton Roads and Falmouth. Use one of the extra supply wagons you have to create another depot in the valley or at Culpepper.

If anything is going to oversupply Virginia, its more depots, not less.

I know it seems that having fewer depots between two points would streamline the flow of supplies, because there will be fewer depots for supply to get stuck in, but actually it doesn't work that way, because the amount of supply moving from A to B is dependent on how many 'ticks'--basically the number of days needed to move supplies from A to B during each supply phase--.

So if there a line of depots (A, B, C) and you destroy B, during each of the 3 supply phases supplies will move from A to C, but it will be less supply that can be moved from A to B or from B to C. With depot B intact, supplies will move from B to C and from A to B each phase and the amount will be greater during each phase.

Also, Garysburg NC is a chokepoint between VA and the rest of the CSA. I believe if you destroyed the depot in Petersburg, then supplies from Garysburg are now four regions from Richmond. The supplies can only move by rail.

In effect the depots are "pumps" that move supplies, so if you destroy a one, it gets harder to move supplies. If you want more supplies in Richmond, I suggest you stockpile supply wagons there which will draw more supply units there.

That's a great analogy pgr

And this is the part you have to be careful about.

The connections between locations are like pipes. The better the connection, the larger the pipe, Railroads and Rivers being the best, if points in their respective pools are available.

The amount of supply which can be contained in the location (the storage tank) determines the pressure/pull of that 'tank'. This pressure/pull is augmented by supply units, and 'needs' of units drinking from the tanks. So simply filling a location with supply units will not cause it to fill as much with supply, as if the supply is actually being used.

I see your point Captain O. I was kinda meaning a stockpile in a general sense. A player can't directly control how supplies flow through the network, its automated and supplies will flow to troop concentrations. However, with supply wagons, you can manually create a stockpile by congregating wagons. So if you park a bunch of wagons in Richmond, you can effectively create a large "stockpile"...that happens to be sitting in the wagons not the depot.

Yes, it will cause some more supplies to be moved into Richmond, but not nearly as much as when supplies are being pulled from Richmond and thus Richmond must call supplies from elsewhere; of course, assuming the South has a well managed supply-line into and out-of Richmond.
