Apple just decided to pull games that have the Confederate flag! They cite the recent terrorist attack by a lone gunman as their reason to cleanse history of symbols that incite hatred from some deranged people? They mentioned a great historical game, Ultimate General Gettysburg, as being pulled from their app. As a private company, they have that right; however that does not mean they are right.
Apple is in no way the sole outlet of transferring information, so the Confederate flag will stay available for loons to find a reason to hate. They are a private company and have the right to bar what they do not wish to sell; but that does not mean they are right. When I see a CSA flag waving on a pickup truck (I live in a rural area of Western Washington, and one guy does fly the flag) I admit I become apprehensive and a little uncomfortable. So what, I am a big boy and understand that people fly that flag for generally one of two reasons, they are racist OR they want to exhibit Southern Pride in their heritage and these can very well be mutually distinct. I also noticed that Civil War II has a partial CSA flag and Brother Against Brother has the crossed rifles which appear on the flag too. I assume they are next. I hope Slitherine/Matrix/Ageod do not bow to the fascist whims of Apple and aim to preserve history in its historical content (sorry, Apple, history is not all about gumballs and butterflies!)
In a non-gaming note, I have no problem with the removal of CSA flags from statehouses to historical edifices, as that seems a more appropriate place to exhibit that item and government offices should only exhibit the national and state flags.
