I've done a lot of posting about what I use for an army, perhaps a .jpg is worth a kilobyte of text.

An Artillery Division of 20-lbers:

An Elite Infantry Division with upgraded militia:

An Army of these units:

The numbers:

This is a minimum setup for what I would do as a Union player to make a good army stack.

Awesome! I am gonna Ctrl+c those.

In the elite division, you use cavalryman, artillery man as separate leaders. So their abilities stack in like support units?

Ah the coming of modern war; it looks like the boys in butternut are on the way to becoming cannon fodder.

That setup looks to be about as good as you can get it. Though I am sure Forrest would love to find that artillery division out on its own.

Out of curiosity; do you think putting elements with unit bonuses into the artillery division would make it better? A Sharpshooter, an elite, or a marine perhaps?

In combat, the artillery Division hardly ever gets targeted, because the game mechanic zeroes in on big brigades. If you put anything other than guns in the artillery Division, then those sub-units just get chewed up.

Yes, an officer with cavalry or artillery specialty does the most damage in the biggest army.

With latest RC there is a counterbattery fire feature. I wonder what's the effect on an artillery Division ?

I have noticed since the latest releases that I lose a lot of guns in big battles.
This is extra hard as the CSA. I also wonder if putting artillery in a seperate division reduces these effects.

I must admit that I have yet to experience any casualties in a pure artillery Division. The counter-battery aspect may target large, mixed Divisions and ignore small artillery ones.
