MTSG and Posture

Sun Mar 29, 2015 5:36 pm

I have read various interpretations of posture and MTSG; what is the final verdict? Can a corps in a defensive stance MTSG to help a nearby corps?

Thanks

Yes, definitely, but if it is in OP (Offensive Posture) there will be a slightly greater chance.

And Army assets; do they have to be in an adjacent region or can they be in the same region as a corps to help/MTSG?

Thanks

I have no idea what "army assets" are.

An army stack will always be exempt from being attached over other stacks is in the same region[SUP]1)[/SUP]. Think of it as everybody protecting the army command. If an army stack is alone in a region it will act the same as any other stack.

Considering only battles within a single region and not MTSG, friendly a friendly stack(s) my be called on, by friendly fighting stacks, to joint the battle. IIRC generally only when the friendly side is outnumbered, or has taken X amount of damage and might be threatening to retreat.

There is a somewhat greater chance for an army stack to MTSG to one of its corps, or for a corps stack to MTSG to the army stack's assistance, than for one corps stack to come to the assistance of another corps belonging to the same army.

Stacks within the same region do not MTSG and AFAIK their army affiliation plays no role in picking which stack(s) fight or if a stack(s) is called to joint the fight.

[SUP]1)[/SUP] This can lead to some very strange situations. For example, an army stack consisting of a number of divisions is defending alone in a region. A friendly supply unit is coincidentally passing through the region when the region is attached by the enemy. Since the army stack is not alone in the region the other stack, a supply unit, is picked to fight the invading enemy corps. It didn't bode well for the supply unit, and then the army stack had to fight anyway.

It gets incredibly frustrating trying to reinforce an army in Alexandria, when the very act of reinforcement will destroy the reinforcing elements and lose you the region.

Infiltrate a Division with a Corps commander. Reform the Division with the force in Alexandria as a Corps. If they get attacked, you should have an army stack that can MTSG.

that does make sense

I was referring to early in the game (prior to corps), when Alexandria is the most important region in the game (for both sides), and all you have is random brigades to send there.
So its vitally important (for both sides), to throw everything they can scrape together into the region, yet doing so makes the position itself untenable.

or the weird random supply wagon Orso mentioned. Its tough to find a CSA corps commander available in August-62 who is available to ferry a supply wagon from Little Rock to Mumfordsville.

Well...D.C. is the most important region early in the game when the CSA has it's best advantage. Troops in Alexandria can't MTSG to D.C., as you point out. So whatever you send to Alexandria should be kept in D.C. or you can get a nasty surprise. I never defend Alexandria and I don't miss it.

You say troops can't MTSG from Alexandria to D.C., why is that? Is it because of the river between them?

Fixed troops in Alexandria (i.e. the automatic garrison received through event) can't MTSG. Other troops have their chance to MTSG reduced by the Potomac river (-10% per day of travel). Note that you can give to your troops the "use rail movement" order so the time to travel from Alexandria to DC will decrease and the chance to MTSG increase.

Remember MTSG is possible only between corps of the same army or between corps and the army stack. So no MTSG before you can form corps (somewhere beginning of 1862).
