Do traits influence the battle plan chosen?

In my current game A.S. Johnston has the "Surpriser" trait.
Does this trait also have an influence on the battles if you choose a battle plan that has a surprise element in it?
Or does it work the other way around: because he has the surpriser trait, he gets access to plans containing a surprise element?
I think the latter?

I wondered this too. I seem to get a different group of plans if Grant is involved than say McDowell or Kearny.

Got a better question here. What exactly influence potential battleplans. I know it depends on skill levels, but maybe there are ways how to sway odds here?

in CW2, the constraints used to limit BP are on the terrain and the 3 attributes strategic-offensive-defensive. You can check the finer details about that by downloading file CW2_DB_BattlePlans_ from CW2 database, modding forum :)
