Athena and W. VA/W. Pennsylvania

Mon Jan 12, 2015 11:24 pm

Athena seems to have an unhealthy obsession with western Pennsylvania and NW West Virginia.

In the July '61 campaign, she seems to almost immediately send Joe Johnston's army up towards Pittsburgh, almost every game. It's no big deal to defend - the supply out there for the CSA is horrible. However, to keep such things from happening repeatedly, I'm finding myself needing to keep a pretty significant number of US troops between Bedford PA and Wheeling WV, just to discourage the AI from heading up that way. When I reduce my troops in the area, another CSA army almost immediately takes off towards Pittsburgh.

Have you guys found any solutions/workarounds to keep Athena from repeatedly tossing her armies into a no-supply situation (especially after losing Clarksburg)?

I have read in the forums that lowering the AI Activation Bonus option (to Easy) and AI Detect Bonus option (to None) will reduce/stop the suicide runs she does to capture VP cities in your rear. With these; I believe using the Colonel Ranking, Use all behaviors On, Normal Aggressiveness and Give AI more time On will keep the AI effective.

Yes, that seems to have done it. I think I was using the recommended settings in the game. That was quite irritating. Thanks!

Cheat!! Cheat!! *gaaaaaaahhhhh.....* Image

Actually if you check your history you'll find that the Union had a significant number of troops stationed in western Virginia/West Virginia; not to specifically prevent an attack on Pittsburgh, but to protect the B&O rail road through the area and the minor industry and public in general.

It was also very political. Since there was a significant part of the population who were pro-Union, leaving them to the unopposed influence of the Confederacy would not have bode well for the their sympathies.

Also, I feel, had they not, then it would have allowed a confederates to liberally garrison troops there and constantly threaten Wheeling and Pittsburgh. Remember, they were always for steering the Union's attention away from Richmond in specific and northern Virginia in general. Plus right across the Ohio River is, well... Ohio, and it's not that far to Lake Eire and major some industrial cities such as Cleveland. Joe Johnston suggested in '61 to make such cities--Pittsburgh too I'm sure--targets of invasion to demoralize and directly weaken the Union.

The problem is that in the game you cannot readily destroy industry in a captured location--like Sherman did in Jackson, Meridian and Atlanta and an entire swath of Georgia on his March to the Sea. Otherwise the Union would pay much more dearly for not protecting such back-woods locations.

Sorry about the outbreak Image

Turn down the AI detection.

If the AI can see that you are not garrisoning major cities that are a 2 turn march from her armies, obviously they are going to attack.

If they cannot see that you're not defending Pittsburgh, or they can't see the size of your Wheeling garrison, then the AI is more likely to deal with the threats it can see - namely, the armies and objectives right in front of it.
