OK the game doesn't show on the load screen what gives?

Not sure if this is a Windows 8 thing or what. I see this in ACWII sometimes. Real pain. Have the save directory in the game about 10 turns with a PBEM and poof the game is no longer on the load screen. All the files are present in the right directory but when you load the game it is impossible to play as it is not showing.
What is the work around again for this?
