Replacements (newbie q)

Mon Dec 08, 2014 10:13 pm

In opening moves, Jackon's brigade got ripped apart while taking Harper's Ferry. Of course, it's all elite elements. Turns later, it's still decimated. Will I have to purchase replacement points, or if I move him back to a depot and go g/g, will they eventually refill over time (so that I can then split the brigade apart and make better use of the elite elements.)

Hit F2 and make sure you have replacements. Assuming you do, heading back to the depot and going g/g should cause them to start getting replacements. But again, only if they are available (F2).

caudata, welcome!

If you have purchased Elite Replacement chits on the F2 screen, they will be used to refill the red portions even if you are not in a depot. If any of the elements were destroyed outright, and you are playing with historical attrition, then you WILL need to be in a depot to have those elements replaced, and they will cost one full replacement chit each. The posture and location of your forces (g/g, in a depot, etc.) affects the speed at which the elements receive their replacements, but you can "re-fill the red" in the field. You can't draw replacements if you are besieged (the harbor also has to be blockaded if there is one, or replacements will come in by boat). The Union gets replacements in the field at half the speed of an equivalently postured and positioned CSA force.

It sounds like you have not purchased any Elite Replacement chits.

(Aside: with few if any exceptions, you cannot split brigades apart, you can only combine brigades with other brigades into a division once that is allowed.)

Ok, so they won't refill until I purchase the resupply.

I recall that I had the '-' option for Stonewall's bge, but maybe I was looking at something else.

IIRC, many of the named brigades at start for the CSA have a leader attached. If you use the "-" button it will separate the leader from the brigade, but the brigade will stay together as a unit. Until division formation is allowed in the fall of 1861 you might as well leave the leader with the brigade unless you have something else planned for that general, since the unit (brigade in this case) will receive a combat bonus from having the leader attached to it.

caudata, you may already be aware of what I'll describe, and it doesn't apply in your specific example because of the brigade involved but it might help down the road.

If your brigade has completely lost an *element* (e.g. had 3 inf & 1 cav, now has 2 inf & 1 cav), you can combine it with an *element* of the same type. Note this has to be very specific. If the missing element as defined in the unit description is conscript infantry, you have to use conscript infantry as a replacement (I think). In the case of Stonewall's brigade, I think all the elements are elite infantry or sharpshooters and you can't requisition elite infantry elements.

Unfortunately this doesn't apply to an element still exist but has taken significant hits, although I wish the engine could be updated to allow for it.
